  • morning all, I'm halfway through another smokey/smokelets square. We only need another 33 to finish all four blankets and I'm getting strange looks from my postie hahaha!! Hats off to them by the way, there haven't been any probs in that department .
we've had four new members this week so hello and thanks to them.
aussie, thanks for posting yours out hun, I wasn't going to start sewing up until I knew yours were on the way so that at least one your squares will be in Smokys blanket.
Oh by the way, all your stamps are going to a colleague of mine at work who collects them for a dogs home and an otter sanctuary so you are helping other causes too!!

    Hi everyone

Dee - thanks for the update - I'll correct the list

Lainey - I hope your postman isn't buckling under the weight of all the parcels! I have pm'd AussieLass with your address for her squares. Also, I have been collecting stamps for ages because I hate throwing them out; I've been looking for someone who wants them so, if you don't mind, I'll send mine to you with my next squares. I love all these ways of supporting good causes - squares for charity, recycling charity shop and left over wool and now finding somewhere that collects stamps! Gives me a really warm glow.

TATTYCATH - I'll pm you with details for Smoky's squares.

    See you all shortly.

    Kathy
I am just finishing off the next challenge and will post that shortly. I am spring-cleaning my kitchen (yawn - but it needs it!) and had to get that going before treating myself to some time on here!

I will update the list again in the morning. I think that will be the way to do it - I usually get up early so I'll be able to do a count from the night before before anyone starts adding to it during the day - IYKWIM?!

It is just four weeks ago today that I first posted my ‘thinking out loud thought’ of gathering together all our knitting and crocheting skills to produce something that could be given to a deserving cause. I can’t tell you how amazed I am at the response; I did not expect this to appeal to so many people. We are all extremely busy these days with work and family commitments that, although I knew people would WANT to help, they would be unable to find the time to do so. What has happened in those four short weeks is fantastic. Some of you have ‘rediscovered’ knitting and crochet and some of you have even learnt, just to be able to take part. I look upon that as a bonus to the original idea – I love the fact that you have been motivated and encouraged to knit and crochet as much as I love the way you have responded to the appeal for squares.

We have discovered OECS – until this all started, I had no idea such a group existed – yet more people willing to give up their spare time to help those in need. The lovely Naomi (aka Artystitches on the forum) has given us invaluable help and advice and, as you all know, has even taken the time and trouble to set up our Yahoo group for us – she is sewing up all our squares into two blankets to distribute for us AND she is just six weeks away from having her first baby! I think she is wonderful!

I am utterly grateful to Lainey Stardust for sewing up the squares, not just for Smoky’s blanket, but also for blankets for the three Smokelets. She has helped me enormously by keeping far more accurate running totals going and has kept the thread updated.

For those of you who want to carry on with a Wooligans challenge, how about making babiess’ hats for Save the Children? Lainey first mentioned it and I think it would be great because they would be more challenging than squares, would use small amounts of wool and would not involve someone having to sew them all together! There are some lovely free-to-download patterns on www.lovinghands.org.uk/. This is a fantastic group – as you will see if you look on their site. I have emailed them to tell them about us and what we do and to ask if we can send our finished hats.

There are several hat patterns on their site and links to other sites with yet more patterns so there is plenty of choice. Just one point to bear in mind – in some of the countries of the third world, white is the colour of mourning so we cannot make anything in white. Any other colour, any patter, plain or fancy – it’s up to us. I would love it if you took up this next challenge – I can just imagine all the photos coming in and all the colour schemes and patterns you wonderful inventive Wooligans come up. If the squares are anything to go by, the hats will be superb!

We can all still knit squares to send to Naomi and I want to carry on with that – I’d like to keep at least one hat and one square on the go at any one time.

It’s up to each of you whether you want to carry on; I just thought it would be great to keep this lovely friendly community going. I’d be sad if it stopped! I have thoroughly enjoyed the last four weeks and we have produced some fantastic results. You should all be immensely proud of yourselves!

I shall post this both on the MSE thread and the Yahoo group and wait and see what you all think!

    Thanks to all of you.

have a good day folks, I don't need to go shopping today so I'm going to do my chores, maybe a bit a baking and then sit and knit . see you later, Lainey.xxx

PS. Kathy, I second your idea & thoughts and would like to add my thanks to everyone who has got involved. Whether you have sent in one square or 20 squares , every stich has been knitted with such love that it really has restored my faith in human nature.

Hi Lainey - thanks for a lovely post. This has restored my faith in human nature, too. The collective effort involved is heartwarming. There are some lovely people around, aren't there?

I've just updated the list to include Dee's corrections.

The figures are in three groups: the first is for HTA, the second is for Smoky and the Smokelets and the third is the squares Lainey has received so far. Thanks for the list, Lainey!

    TOTALS:

    114 HTA
134 SMOKY and the SMOKELETS (68 received so far)

that’s only 12 needed for 2nd HTA blanket, and only 34 needed to have enough for Smoky and her 3 Smokelets’ blankets.

We started this exactly four weeks ago today! We have completed 261 squares which works out at just over 64 squares a week and just over 9 squares a day. Considering you all have work and family commitments, this is amazing. You should all be immensely proud of yourselves.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels welled up when reading through this thread, the amount of love and kindness shown is overwhelming. I stumbled across the OS page a few weeks ago by clicking on the wrong link which has turned out to be the RIGHT click. Because of that I am privilaged to be a part of our kniting group.
A huge well done to everone of you, if there was a slap on the back icon it would go to Lainy and Moilliere. :A
    Love to all Beth x
