This might sound like a stupid question but how do I change colours for the second pattern here? Do I need to cut the wool or something? I don't understand.
Ianna, what you do is knit one row green, purl one row green. Now get a ball of white wool and knit one row white, purl one row white. Now grab hold of the green wool again (it's two rows below where you currently are) and knit one row green, purl one row green. You carry the wool up the side. Where you join in a new colour, the first stitch is very loose so you generally tie in the new colour of wool. You can knit weave the extra "tails" into the back of the stitches but let's not run before we can walk...

This is a piece of cake to demonstrate but not so easy to describe, so here is a video for you ! http://www.knitandcrochettoday.com/kme/K12.html Hope this helps!

That's great thanks for the link. I understood what you meant perfectly when I saw the video :)

I've gone a bit knitting mad since I saw this lovely thread and have made SIX innocent smoothie hats! Two are striped the rest are plain. They are rather lovely if I say so myself. After I've finished this wool I'm going to start on a baby blanket or something like that.

Must go. Typing this is taking up valuable knitting time.

Right, have advanced past IS hats - I've made nine now thanks to all you guys! Have looked over the baby blankets and am going to make this one or this one cos they look quite straight forward.

It might sound stupid but how do I cast on with so many stitches? Do I keep them all on the needle or do I pass them from one needle to the other? Or do I slip them off the end of the needle that I'm putting them on if you know what I mean?

Also a garter stitch is just plain knit stitch isn't it, or have I misunderstood something?

And what does the yo in this sentence mean, I've searched on the knitting help sites but I'm not sure:

    Row 1 - Knit 5, * k1, yo, k2 tog, repeat from * across ending with knit 5.
