PIPPA, our DD is 25yrs old now, I know that there's so much more that can be done nowadays but even all those years ago the Med team fought for her as much as she did. I couldn't thank them enough. I was with her 24/7. I would lay my hands on the incubator and pray and pray. The prayers were answered, she was born 28th Oct '82, we had her home on 23rd Dec. She was rushed back in on 12th Jan with silent pnumonia and was on a life support machine, after 3 weeks we brought her home again, she is an angel, we are so close and I treasure every minute of her life.
I will continue to knit the prem clothes even if the Wooligans cease to be, but I can't see that happening.
Love to all Beth x
Hi Beth 25 yrs ago thats a long time, but I bet you still go cold at the thought of it all.
I cant see us Wooligans ceasing to be either, but prem knitting will always be a part of my life too.

Hi everyone; Beth - your story of your DD's fight for survival makes me shiver - you must count your blessings every time you look at her. She must be such a determined girl - the daughter of one very determined and loving mum!
Everyone has done so well with the hats; I shall update the lists - I have only managed to complete one more hat this weekend; we have spent the afternoon at DS2's helping him hang doors and I wish I'd taken my knitting with me. Instead, his bride-to-be and I talked 'weddings' for four hours!
I hope everyone is having a good weekend - we have had torential rain for most of the day but that's nothing compared to some parts of the world where the people are really suffering - I certainly feel I have nothing to complain about here. We are so lucky, aren't we?
I hope the Wooligans never ceases to be! We have so much to offer between us and there will always be deserving causes.

Morning Kathy, after a hard day yesterday I found it relaxing to knit so now my total is 6 prem hats.
Hope you all have a good day

Hi Mrs Moneypenny - thanks for the update - you're doing so well with the hats! That new wool sounds really lovely.
Beth - thanks for your update - I'm glad you are finding the knitting relaxing but hope it's not causing pain. I expect it helps to take your mind off the forthcoming ops, though, so I shan't tell you off!
Right, off to update then out to the village and the gym (unless I change my mind as I head back to the car - I've done that before on a cold day when I just wanted to get back home!)
Have a good day.
Kathy

Hello Kathy
I've just made 3 tiny hats for the local SCBU using the Super Stretchy Hats pattern from Preemies UK. I also used up some wool oddments and will give those to a friend who says she can 'do anything with any size of square'.
I made a knitted wrap using the Preemies UK pattern for 'Knitted Wrap with Hood'. This was made by an 8-year old boy, but I am ashamed to say I don't understand the pattern instructions. Having knitted the wrap, instructions for knitting the hood are: 'Cast on again 4 stitches. 1st row: K1, yarn forward, knit to the end. 2nd row: K1, yard forward, knit to the end.' I understand that. What I don't understand is what follows: 'Repeat this row until you have 14 ridges and then cast off'.
What does she mean by 'ridges' and how do I count them? It would be easier to say how many rows, how many stitches or how many inches. But 'ridges'? Can one of you clever people please explain?
Also, the Save the Children pattern for a knitted hat gives clear basic instructions how to knit. Well, I can knit. What I'd like to see is some basic clear instructions similarly for how to crochet!
Can anyone help me?Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

Hi MargaretClare - here is a link to crochet instructions! http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/instruction_directory.php - it's very easy to do, I promise! This site gives lots of basic patterns http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/
I'll add your three hats to the running totals in my last post!
With the wrap pattern you are struggling with I can only think they mean the ridges caused by garter stitch because they ask you to knit each row. Sorry I can't be any help!

Kathy, what I mean is - how many rows of garter stitch does it take to make a 'ridge'?
If it's 2 rows per ridge for instance, then I can count 28 rows for 14 ridges. I could understand that!
I've just been along to a little shop locally called 'The Sewing Box' because I wanted a row counter, and it's an absolute treasure trove for sewing, knitting and all kinds of crafts! I bought 2 more 50g balls of Sirdar 'Snuggly' 4-ply at £1.50 each, these were in the 'bargain box'. As I'm knitting only for charity there is absolutely no point in paying full price for exactly the same thing, the only difference being ends of dye batches.
Thanks for the crochet instructions.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

margaret clare - hope I can explain a little about the ridges in the preemie hats.
Each 'ridge' is formed by a knit row-purl row-knit row, so three rows in total. Once you start knitting the ridges become visible on each side, so the first three rows form the first ridge on side 1 and the second three rows form the first ridge on side 2. to count the ridges, there should be the same number of ridges on each side.
does that make any sense?r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0
