Nice Meester, you've put some effort into your workings out.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
Just to add, you can buy tax online.
My tax doesn't actually expire till 30th April.
But I have gone here:
http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/?SKIN=directgov
Type in my details, ordered a tax disc, job done.
Got the following message:
"A new licence is not due for this vehicle until: 01 05 2008
PLEASE BE AWARE - THERE IS A CURRENT VALID TAX DISC IN FORCE FOR THIS VEHICLE. IF YOU PROCEED, THE DISC THAT WILL BE ISSUED WILL START FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE EXISTING MONTH RATHER THAN THE START OF NEXT MONTH.
If you apply for a tax disc today the Licence Start Date on the tax disc will be: 01 03 2008 "
Fine, no problem. Even without claiming the refund for the unused month of April, I'm still £30 up.
No need to go to post office at all.0 -
I must confess, I am pretty confused about why you said gambler can't save anything, and I find the whole idea a bit confusing.
However, I can see that for some cars cancelling now, and taking 12 months from the 1st March 2008 does make sense. Thus they will lose the month of March 2008. But don't understand why 'gambler' can't benefit
Well done though for bringing this to everyones attention, My car is a low band, I don't think I will save anything, but I will check for my families cars, once I get my head round the whole idea.0 -

Hi.
I have put up a spreadsheet in the original post, and also rewritten it.
The reason gambler cannot benefit is that he is already getting some of the benefit of lower tax. Because his car tax expires 30 September 2008, when he renews, the months of April,May,June,July,August, September 2009 (six months), will be taxed at the lower rate. So by renewing in March 2009 he only saves HALF the difference between the 2008 and 2009 rates, because he is only getting an extra six months by doing this. So his tax has gone up by £50, but cut that in half is £25. When you take off a month's tax at £260/12 = £21.67, you get a saving of only £3.33.
The car owners that benefit the most will be those whose tax is expiring soon. If your tax expires 31 August 2008, renewing for six months is also going to be attractive, because of the fact that although you are only locking in six more months at the lower rate, there is no additional effort (in claiming the refund), and also because of the fact that the additional cost of a six-month disc is less than one extra month.0 -
Sorry, meester, could I double-check with you as well. I've just renewed for 12 months starting 1st March 08 so, provided I renew for 12 months next year as well, I don't need to do anything else to save the £18 for my 171-180g CO2 banded car?Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
Debt free success date: 14.8.2006 :j0 -
Am I correct in saying you can only get refunds on your car tax for complete months.?0

Hi, you actually save £35, because you don't need to claim a refund and lose a month of tax. The £18 is for people re-taxing and losing a month. For car tax expiring 28th February 2009 don't need to do anything.0
