Sorry i will rephrase my wording, put the winnings into your childrens (child trust funds).
This will ensure that they have a good start in life. So now tell me DaisyFlower would this also be frauding the system.;)

As DaisyFlower has said, the DWP may check the children's accounts (whether they be traditional savings accounts or trust funds), and may consider the action to be intentional deprivation of capital, and therefore count the money as notional capital.

Ah so what you are saying is that the person who has won would be accused of being dishonest by transferring their winnings to their children, not that they may be genuine and show a sincere care of their childs future, such as i would with mine.
Also if this is the case then this government should be ashamed of themselves, mmm your parents are on benefits and regardless of what they win, you kids certainly aint going to benefit from it, but hang on i tell you what we will do, we will stop your parents benefits because they have exceeded their allowance, and you can have the money now.;)
  • Emotive and confrontational language there by setmefree - the question still remains, why does setmefree and others here think that someone who has just won a lot of money should be entitled to means-tested benefits?

So you think the duke and duchess of devonshire should be able to put their £50m plus estate into a trust in their (under 16 yr old) childrens names and claim means tested benefits including a rent payment to the trust for their country home?

I did not say any of that? I stated fact, I did not make judgment as to the motivations of the claimant.

Now this depends how much they won, if they say win small amounts up to a couple of grand i dont see any problem with them spending it, paying of debts or buying something they really want, i dont see how they should be made to report it.

But *if* however it was a very large sum that was life changing and took them over the thresholds then yes they should report it and stop claiming benefits for the periods it last.

I don't advocate people defrauding the system and i am agaisnt fraudulent claims just as much as anyone, but i don't have a problem with someone having a win within reason.

So everybody here who is on means-tested benefits and won say 2grand in cash would turn up at the benefits office and say " hey i won 2 grand this week i don't need my benefit this month" I really don't think so how ever martyer they may come across.

Of course you didnt say that!!
And what about our great mp's who can claim upto £22000 each on furnishing a 2nd home, but of course that is not someone claiming benefits is it?

You are correct, MP's are not claiming benefits, and therefore they can do as they wish with their money. Furthermore, whether we agree with their allowable expenses or not (I am lucky enough to have an MP who does not abuse their generous allowances, so it is not so relevant to me), the accounts of MP's are publicly available should we choose to look at them, and therefore they are not hiding any income or outgoings.
