how does it delay everyone else in the q if she let the guy behind her go first, remember you and the q are behind the guy in the first place!

    As per OP:

....To make matters worse, she then held up the entire queue by trying to ask the guy behind her if he was paying in cash for his two items, then he could go infront of her (i.e. she was aware she had too much stuff in her basket), but her english was so bad, it took 4 attempts for him to understand.....

lets be honet, most checkout operators( made up title?) wont want the hassle of pulling someone up.
the oher day i had to say somethnig to a right snooty pair being really cheaky to the staff in starbucks(its my regular near work)
they soon shut up,not so tough whenits not someone in uniform having to be polite to the customer.
personally for 22 items i woul have stepped up and told them.

for me i dont mind 10,12 or that ballpark area.same goes for trolleys in the handbasket queue as long s it in the same region as a basket amount.
i too carry the baby in the trolley but only have a small baskets worth of stff ;)

you DIDN't speak to her so how can you say she was aware she had too many items!

if her english was that bad, in your opinion, maybe she would have had difficulty reading the sign 'less then 10'

instead of slagging ppl off why did you not try and talk to her and maybe help her understand, what is the world coming to?

    sigh

She delayed the queue because it took her forever to explain in english to the guy behind her that she wanted him to go infront as she was aware she had too many items in her basket and he only had 2, and in the mean time, no one got served until we finally worked out what she was saying!

Thank you grayme-m for pointing out to Sssssssssss that he/she didn't read the post properly!

What made it even more irritating/funny was that this woman tried explaining (in terrible english) what each item of clothing was for to the poor check out guy. Thankfully she didn't comment on the gigantic white pants that were obviously not for her grandchildren!!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I was always enforceful when i was operating a 10 items or less till or a basket only till, the operators are numptys and probably dont care, but then people should look if there any restrictions on the till they are putting theyre shopping onto

Gosh, that's so mean!! Where do they employ these numpties!?!? I know it's not the greatest job in the world, but still! They might as well TRY and enjoy it.

The problem is you can't win if you are on the checkout or in customer services. If they turn away customers with 20 or more items, they will get abuse, if they don't then the customers who are behind them in the queue get annoyed.

I've been in Tesco and seen it happen that the checkout manager has asked people to go to another checkout when they have way too many items, and there is always some smart !!! comes away with the "I've only got a couple of things" (when they have an overflowing basket).

There is an easy way to sort it, make the till stop processing after ten items. They can then take the other items to another till....

When I was at Tesco, one Sunday the customers were really taking the pee shopping well after four (when the store closed). Numerous announcements were made they should get to the tills. A smart !!!! customer said to me, 'what's the fuss about' and something else, I replied with the truth, 'At 4.30pm all the tills switch off automatically and we go home'. She didn't respond.
