  • well i just thought i would give an update as i havent posted for a long while, i had saved up a little over £25k for a deposit but have decided to hold off buying for a while as ive just booked a Round the World ticket :D
I leave in Jan for 5 months, seeing 10 countries.. cant wait:beer:

After thinking long and hard i thought that as im approaching 30 if i dont do it now i never will, so have put the house purchase and career on hold for a while.
I have budgeted £1,000 per month in living costs plus £1,600 for my ticket, the total should run to a little over £7k.

Im going to sell my car for around £6k and save another £3/£4k by jan, so hopefully on return i should have around £25k+ for a deposit :) plus a few quid for a cheaper car.

Hopefully when i return i will find a house under budget in an area i like :rotfl:

Hello can I join too? I could really do with the motivation!

My position is a wee bit odd. I recently changed jobs and moved cities. I have a flat in my home city which I have rented out as it doesn't make sense to sell it, I also have a tiny flat with my partner in my new city. We thought it was better to use the savings we had and buy somewhere small as it is so expensive to rent where we are - the mortgage payments are quite alot less than the rental would be on the same place.

The new flat is lovely but very small and we'd really like a house with a garden. We're not sure whether to keep the flat and rent it or sell it and use the equity so for the moment I'm not counting on getting anything from it towards a deposit.........which means we're starting again from scratch! i know my position is different from many on here but hopefully you won't mind me posting as the end goal is the same :)

The prices for houses hrer is still pretty high so we need £40 to £50k .
My target is £40k. I've been saving for a few months so I currently have £5k and OH thinks he will be able to put in around £20k from savings he's built up over all his working life - I'm newer to being sensible than him but then he didn't marry the wrong guy and have to split the equity built up over 7 years

Good luck with all your targets!

  • Hi Dinah, hi Tara thanks for the warm welcome.

Dinah thats great about the amazon vouchers, that will really help you along. and as for the wedding, congrats and im sure your friends and family will get you some great wedding presents.

What i tend to do is, if i see something on sale that i like and need il just buy it and add it to my collection. Oh and my lovely mummy does it as well if she spots any bargains that she knows will come in handy she will get it for me. I certainly have a good set up lol.

Funnily enough though, i do have a small secondary savings account that i try to put money into every now and again. I guess that will come in handy when i have to buy big items like my sofa etc.

  • My monthly payday update!! :j

Another £400 added today, taking my total to just over the £4K mark :T
Still got my £5k by Christmas target in sight and think I might be able to get over that if I keep saving the way I have been :D

    Hi everyone,

Lots of new people and exciting posts happening. Have a great trip Mark W!

I've just transferred £500 into an Isa taking my deposit up to (drum roll) £2750 in total!!

I saved up £20k last year and paid it into current mortgage in July making me and other half "even stevens" on his original deposit of which I contributed ...er..nothing!

Now I'm back at the start again and it is almost liberating to start over. I remember how much motivation this thread gave me in saving up my original £20k over the previous 15 months. Plus I've now quit smoking!!!

Keep up the good work people!!

  • Hi everyone!!

I currently have 13k saved so far, and my parents have just offered to give me 10k towards my deposit :o) so that brings me to a total of 23k! I haven't decided on a target as yet as I am buying the property on my own so I think realistically I will have to have a really big deposit :o(

I'll give it another 6 months and see how much I can save, but living at home is driving me nuts... lol
