What is wrong with spending your holiday in Weston Super Mare?
The population there accept GB pounds and think how much you will save on currency convertion costs.

Ahh but in western super mare the wine is too dear - even with the weak pound! Its never £3 or more for a pint in Spain is it?

Cuba it is then. Obviously offsetting any additional CO2 emissions from the longer flight by planting out some trees when you arrive.

You're totally right ryandj but there's something strange about the way it seems to be being ignored - there must be, literally, millions of people in the UK traveling to Spain, France, Italy or wherever, for their hol's this summer who are facing dramatic increases in the cost and nobody seems to be complaining (apart from me) I just wondered if I was missing something !

I think maybe there are other more important things in the news at the moment than Brits on holiday unfortunately.

Something about a credit crisis, impending collapse of the banking system, and the resultant difficulties (eg crash of housing market, impossibility of banks or consumers to borrow money).

Besides, currency is always up and down. Looking at historical rate, i think it has been as much as 1.7 euro to the GBP, although this is an all time low. Probably due to the poor state of the UK economy at the moment, rising consumer debt, and so on.

There is a belief among the population of the UK that Europe is a bad thing. Therefore anything other than bad news slagging off Europe will never be published, I believe that this includes ignoring the fact that the Euro is thriving whilst the pound is getting weaker (against the Euro) and weaker by the second.

Unfortunately the pound and dollar seem to be collapsing together at the moment while the Euro is staying stronger. These things change all the time so the pound could always strengthen again. Shame we didn't join the Euro when we had the chance (I'm ready to take cover from the flak!).

A good time and year then to stop at home and keep your holiday money circulating in the UK economy .

If you really want to go abroad, especially at peaks times bide your time .
The low value of the Pound against the Euro will result in low booking numbers for Euro holidays and probably some late bargains.

Here in the UK we would rather cut off our nose to spite our face than actually do something sensible.

As for holidaying abroad I went to Holland last week on only my 3rd non uk holiday ever. I am 31 and have spent approx 2 weeks of those 31 years abroad. I am however going on another 2 foreign trips this year and am very much for the continental way of living.

Really good comments - thanks chaps - Weston-Super-Mare sounds good but I booked the Spanish hotel, car hire and flights months ago - more fool me ! Sorry though "...more important things in the news..." Heather and Paul McCartney - yeah right ! I'll go on my holiday to the Costa Brava and have, maybe, one less beer a day and try and convince myself that I've covered the increases and maybe try and stop my wife from buying those leather shoes in the market that were once "... a quarter of the price they are at home .... ". Anyway I feel better for getting it off my chest and good to see how popular this site is. Take care - Roger
