Sorry i'm not sure if this is the right thread for my question.

I want to change around £600 into Euro's, will i have to pre-order this amount?. I'm thinking of changing it at the post office or would somewhere else be better?, Tesco/bank/airport/travel agent?. I'm aware things change on a daily basis, i just don't understand enough to know where i will get the better deal.

    Many thanks for any replies

Read Martins article here and then use the travel money maximiser he has on that page http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-travel-money#cheapest

It will tell you the best rate, how much postage etc. I found the Post Office was the best for the amount of money I will be taking to Ireland.

For that sort of sum you shouldn't need to order in advance. You MAY need some id to buy it.

Buying online is usually cheapest - but check on delivery charges. They may eat into the saving. As may card fees if your card charges for currency transactions.

Next is an ATM in resort - yes there will be charges with most cards, but they will at worst be around the same as:

Getting cash in a BdeC here. Any of the places you mention may be cheapest on the day you buy - you just have to go round a few of them (or all if you are that worried) and see who in your town on that day is best. If you go back next day - or go to a different town the same day - it won't necessarily work out the same.

In SOME resorts in SOME BdeC you may get a better deal than here.

For a while now I have been reading the posts on this subject so I thought I put in my first post.

For a while now there has been much talk of the Euro taking a massive tumble. Some so called experts have been saying in the press that they expect it in the next few months, but they have been saying this for the last six months or so and it hasn't happened yet. I do agree that the Eurozone is hiding behind a smoke screen and believe that some countries will default. But why when so much bad news comes out of the eurozone it does little to the euro?

    Hi Verona

    Good question.
One that if we knew the answer too, we'd all be millionaires....
I've worked on a Trading Floor for many years now, and even I can't fathom out why the markets look so fondly on the Euro. I'm not and FX trader, but FX traders in my office cannot even get their heads round it either!

Just got this feeling that sooner or later its all going to correct itself in a big big way, just can't put my finger on exactly when, sorry !!

Thanks for the reply IM. I must say you do a great job of keeping this thread running, keep up the good work.

I guess I'll just have to see what happens over the coming weeks RE the exchange rate. I've got a huge ammount of sterling to change into euro's about Sept/Oct time.

Could we see the start of a rise again into the 1.13 area following the poor EU figures released yesterday?
It's far better to be penny wise than pound foolish.

  • [07:25 EUR/GBP: Slammed By Sterling Recovery] London, May 5th.

    The return of UK
markets has seen the Pound in demand and as Sterling recovers the Euro cross is
sagging. The early European drop back onto the 0.88-handle has seen stops triggered and downward momentum accelerate sub-0.8880, with .8859 in the ensuing follow-through.

However, the EUR and GBP are both struggling against the USD and this could open the cross to a bout of consolidation as the individual legs vie for positioning.

    0.8859 = 1.1288
