14:14 24Apr09 Sterling cuts losses, traders cite overseas c.bank buying

LONDON, April 24 - Sterling pares losses on Friday, with traders citing demand from overseas central banks helping the currency to recover from a fall earlier in the day after grim UK growth data.

Sterling <GBP=D4> rose a around cent to a session high of $1.4729 <GBP=D4> and the euro <EURGBP=R> trimmed its gains to around 90.17 pence, but still 0.8 percent up on the day.

Traders said sterling was boosted by demand from central banks as part of their regular reserves management.

They also said that buying by a European bank and short covering by model funds were helping the UK currency to trim losses, but the pair stayed under downward pressure, trading 0.2 percent lower on the day.

  • 14:16 24Apr09 EUR/GBP: Weighed Down by Aggressive ME Buying of GBP

[13:16 EUR/GBP: Weighed Down by Aggressive ME Buying of GBP] London, April 24.

Aggressive buying of the pound by a Middle Eastern monetary authority and a
German bank are being flagged as prime factors in the sharp EUR/GBP drop to
European afternoon/NY session lows just shy of 0.9000. The talk is that the ME
name hit the German name, who then hit the market. Buy stops above 0.9000 were
tripped in early European trade (pre-German IFO survey). 0.8999 was yesterday"s
high. 0.8978 was today"s Asian session top.

    EUR/GBP scaled a 15-day peak of 0.9082 shortly before 12:00GMT. 0.9088 was
    the April 9 high.

Well lets hope the fall in the pound following last weeks budget is over and all eyes look again at the state of the Eurozone.

Onwards and upwards so I can get my 1.14 in 3 weeks time.
It's far better to be penny wise than pound foolish.
