I paid out more in petrol than I actually got paid (I delivered to a very rural part of the country - never ever again) - so don't bother!

I delivered phonebooks a couple of years ago. I got £75.00 for it and I think it cost me more to do the job. You will probably have to take a day off work and if you have a car will have to do several journeys to collect all the books. When you are delivering them you will be constantly running back and forward for more books. If you are planning to bribe your kids to help you that is another cost and then there is the additional cost of takeaway food because you have been out all day.

If you have a van it is a viable option but with a car and petrol at £1.05 you could well be paying out for the priviledge.

Oh my, this brings back memories. My husband and I did this years ago with the kids. We desparately needed money and although I can't remember the figures, we made enough to make it worthwile......we did it 3 years running. The secret is definitely organisation!

We hired a van from a local company (wasn't very expensive) to go and pick all the books up. We stored them in the garden hut and in the house. We would organise the address list the night before.

When we delivered books, my husband would drop us off in the car at one end of a street with a few bundles, me and the kids would start delivering them and he would drop bundles of books periodically along the street to the end and would then start delivering books on the opposite side of the street from us and so on for each street. In tower blocks, he would take x-amount of bundles in the lift and drop a bundle at each floor, we would start delivering from the bottom and he would start at the top.......saved loads of time. We used to take picnics for the kids and they absolutely loved it (weather was good). It certainly was tiring but created lots of happy memories!! Think there was a lesson about the value of money in there for the kids!!

I did the phone book in January through a company called DEYA - google it and see what it comes up with. The site should tell you which books are being delivered in which areas at which times.

We did 560 books for £75 and it was hard work. I have to say we were dreading the flats but they actually worked out the easiest.

I don't know about the paying tax bit though cos when i picked up the books, i had to fill in form with my NI number etc on it an assumed that they did that for you. After all you are employed by them. At no point at all was i told i needed to pay my own tax.

Bit worried now cos i'm being investigated by HMRC for a tax credits compliance check and have to send EVERYTHING to them for the last 3 months. Tax credits have been stopped meantime

    Dun dun dun.......

I looked at this about 3 years ago.

Went along to collect the books and went through the instructions about delivering (like not leaving the books in view if the householder is not in). Looked at how much they were paying and how long it was really likely to take to deliver and decided it was well below the minimum wage as it then was - never mind how much petrol would cost.

Also it was on a self-employed basis so would need to advise Inland Revenue (as then was). Probably would have avoided additional NI because it wasn't all that much money.

Oh, I decided it wasn't worth it and put my wasted morning down to experience.
