my o/h company move from chester to yorkshire , so he drives back an to every day to work which cost us a small fortune in petrol not to mention he has to leave the house 4.30 am and can arrive home between 7pm /8pm
has anyone know if you can claim any help from the tax ,my o/h is 63 yrs old . i worry every day for my o/h saftey
  • I used to commuted 100 miles per day (round trip) through rush hour traffic.
Just moved further south past the bottle neck (36 miles per day round trip) and it takes anywhere between 25-35 minutes each way.
The secret to long commuting is to be calm (advanced driving helps) a bluetooth fitted in car kit and a DAB radio.
Lets get this straight. Say my house is worth £100K, it drops £20K and I complain but I should not complain when I actually pay £200K via a mortgage:rolleyes:

We used to live 55 miles away from Hubby's work. He travelled by bus then train to get there. It was a nightmare, and he was rarely home early. I fell pregnant and we decided to move closer to his work. Him getting a job closer to us was out of the question, he works in a specialised area and there are only a few companies and all the local ones had closed, hence him working at the next nearest company - 55 miles away.

We moved so we were only 9 miles away from his work. Great for my hubby, he enjoyed cycling to work and he was home early, but I hated it. I hated not having my family around near to me and the people were so unfriendly. So 9 months later, we upped sticks and moved back to our old city, but this time we moved to the South side of it so we were slightly nearer to his work.

We are now 39 miles away from Hubby's work. He travels by car now, we got a diesel that does fairly good mileage and it's comfortable for the long drive.

Hubby is happy and I'm happy. Don't get me wrong, if we could be nearer to his work and also be near to our families, then we would do it. But unfortunately, we have had to choose one over the other and we found living close to our families was more of a priority for us.

My OH drives 25 miles each way and it's becoming a real pain for him now. He didn't mind a few years ago but it's a drudge these days.

Could you see yourself still being happy with the commute after doing it day in day out for years?

    Don't drive :o

It's 11 miles though. 25 minutes Metro journey into Newcastle and a 25 minute walk down Scotswood Road. Usually 55 minutes in all. Alternatively, I sometimes cycle there in 40 minutes or run in 90.
