<pops head over fence nervously>
Does anyone mind a newbie popping in for a quick chat? I'm utterly depressed this afternoon. I'm completely broke and seem to be totally incapable of cutting down on my spending. I know the theory but money just runs through my fingers like sand - I make packed lunches and then leave them at home, spend money on lattes whilst waiting for the train that's running 3/4 hr late, buy magazines on the way home to cheer myself up and am totally incapable of maintaining a spending diary for more than 3 days at a time. And it's only going to get worse when my boyfriend is posted to the other end of the country and I have to fork out for expensive train fares every weekend (he can't come to me because of his job).
I'm also feeling very fat and totally incompetent at housekeeping/menu planning. Ugh. It must be Friday afternoon :-(0 -
Happy birthday to Metherer, Chardonnay and Redruby. :bdaycake:
I'm still at school, but thought that I'd better [STRIKE]waste time [/STRIKE]check in with you before I start the mass of marking that seems to have crept up on me. I *think* that I'm sorted for next week's Ofsted (Tues and Weds) classroom wise. No doubt I'll have a panic over the weekend. I've got to dot the i s and cross the ts with my planning, but that's something that I can do over this weekend.
We've got no home rugby match to go to tomorrow, which is lucky. However, DH and I are going to hear Stephen Veneables speak tomorrow night in our little town's literature festival. DH is into mountains and SV is the nutter that climbed to the top of Everest without oxygen. Sunday night we're going to hear Nicholas Crane (Great British Journeys and Coast bloke). There's another author that I would have liked to have seen next Tuesday, but I really SHOULD be stressing over the following day in Ofsted.
When I leave school tonight, I'm heading straight to the cinema - but in our little town as I'm attempting to volunteer there. I'm in the box office tonight, as people collect their tickets. This is my "first time", so I do hope that people are nice to me.
I'm not overly sure whether I get a free ticket tonight or not, but I definitely get one next month when I usher!

Right, enough [STRIKE]marking avoidance tactics [/STRIKE]chit chat.
Have a good rest of the day.

Hi everyone.
Welcome to the newbies - pleased to meet you all!
EMPTY PURSE - you've found the right thread. Look on joining us today as the first day of the rest of your new non-wasting-money life. We all hate being ripped off and have trained ourselves to keep spending to a minimum. Keep posting and you will learn loads. I have surprised myself by just how careful I am with money now and I have definitely saved a fortune since I joined MSE and, in particular, this thread. Feel free to ask any questions.
PENPIN - I hope your day hasn't been too bad. Thinking of you.
TIRED MUM - I hope your foot gets less painful.
SCUZZ - congratulations on your new home. Enjoy it!
CATOWEN - good luck! I've never watched Ant and Dec so I have no idea what the toilet roll is all about but I hope you don't get it!
REDRUBY - your hair sounds lovely. Mine is long but dead straight. My DIL and DGD both have beautiful curly hair although it is hard to deal with when they're in a rush to get to work and school! Enjoy the rest of your birthday!
SMOKY - thinking of you.
Well, I ran around like the proverbial blue -a$$ed fly this morning doing errands and I've spent the afternoon doing office work even though I'd much rather have spent it reading the book called 'Wild Knitting' that I picked up from a charity shop - it has fantastic designs in it. When I've finished the 10,000 other projects on my list, I might knit one of them!
I have just shoved some chicken pieces in the oven with a can of mushroom soup, some garlic, courgettes and mushrooms, sprinkled on an Oxo cube, some Herbs de Provence and my special chicken seasoning (from the Indian counter in the Co-op - dead cheap and brilliant!) so, with some new potatoes, that will be dinner sorted out.
I can't believe how the weather has changed today. It was pouring with rain when I woke up yet it has got better and better as the day has gone on. It was great going out without a coat and gloves! We have lovely blue skies and warm sunshine and all my washing has dried on the line! I know they've forecast gales for some of the weekend but I'm hoping they've got it wrong.
I am determined to sit down early tonight and do some more knitting. I find it's the only relaxing thing I do these days. Oh, and I won't forget a drop of the falling-down stuff to celebrate REDRUBY's birthday and all the others!
See you all - have a great evening!

Afternoon all
Hello & welcome to empty purse.
Haribo I'm glad the fabric arrived, it may not fit in colour wise, but it will give you something to practice on.
Happy Birthday Red Ruby, sorry I missed you off this morning.
It was a bit quieter at work today, but I did spend an hour talking to a nice police officer. They say you know you are getting old when the policemen look young. One of the police officers today, used to bounce on the trampoline in my garden with my kids.
Hope you have a better day tomorrow PP.
I'm off to do more crochet, have a good evening.
Hugs Hester

welcome emptypurse, weve all been there, consider this os thread your lifeline of help and friendly advice. I've learned so many new recipies and found ways of saving money by cutting out stuff i didnt realise i didnt need. There is so much good advice in here and so many friendly people you will get lots of support . i found keeping to shopping list saving reciepts to see where my money was going etc a big help but it looks like you have already spotted a few of the areas to work on,
My next area to tighten up on is meal planning as im sure this is going to help me. im also on the use up before replacing campagain my bathroom and cleaning cupboards were stacked full but i still kept buying new stock. Im now not buying till im on the last bottles and from this thread ive learned my kitchen cupboard need never be cluttered up again (i'll only need white vinegar, stardrops and probally a bar keepers friend from now on)
All the very best to you with your budgeting im sure you can do it,:beer:SPC~12 ot 124

Evening all
Am so glad my working week is over, I really feel shattered.
Happy birthday also to Metherer and RedRuby
I've got long curly hair too, it really has a mind of it's own.
Welcome Powie.
EMPTYPURSE we have all been where you are now. Cutting back on the things you don't need seems really hard at first but it gets quite obsessional after a while. It's just a question of training your mind to look at money a different way. Welcome!
Too tired to cook tonight so DS has had a bits and pieces tea and I've had a sandwich and fruit.
House is a tip, will tackle it tomorrow.
Off to do my Tesco's shop on-line. Have a good evening all.
