Hi Consultant 31
I just have a general query.....
I have bought some Holland and Barrett High strength Herbal iron liquid. Ive been feeling run down and my mum suggested I try this.
HOWEVER
Im conscious this could be a hidden syn. I have used the syn calculator but got a result of 37.5 syns per portion?!
I've calculated this to be 3 syns per 20mls. I also found this on the web which could help you get enough iron in your daily foods once you have built your stocks up with the herbal liquid:-
FoodServing size.......... Iron supplied
2 thick slices of lean roast beef 90g 2.3mg
3 tablespoons of baked beans 120g 1.7mg
A boiled egg 50g 1mg
Wholemeal bread (1 average slice) 36g 1mg
Sardines canned in oil (average sandwich filling)50g 1.5mg
An average bowl of fortified breakfast cereal 45g 3mg
4 dried figs 80g 3.4mg
Dark roast turkey meat (average serving) 120g 1.7mg
A tablespoonful of sesame seeds 12g 1.2mg
Spring greens boiled 90g 1.3mg
An average glass of red wine 125g 1.1mg
Liver is another rich source of iron, but it is also very high in vitamin A. So if you eat liver or liver products such as pât! every week, you might want to choose not to have it more often and you should avoid taking supplements containing vitamin A or fish liver oils (which are high in vitamin A).I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

I'm still not understanding - I don't think 'everyone else' (those pesky so-called 'normal/average' people I've never managed to find?) would put rice or pasta into a quiche, yet this is free. But add couscous to the same mixture, and it's not okay. I can cope with rules - rules are good, they help make my goals specific, measurable, acheivable, realistic and time-managed - but here I don't see why there is a different rule for pasta and rice compared with couscous.
Apologies if I sound like I'm banging on, but I really want to follow the rules, but struggle when they seem to contradict one another. I appreciate your input, really.
I think it boils down to foods such as quiche being normal, everyday foods which you would have at lunch or teatime. It's not normal to eat a whole cake for a meal - cake is meant to be eaten a slice at a time. If you're happy to have the couscous cake at the rate of a slice now and then it would be fine, but to eat it in place of a meal isn't!.
he whole ethos of SW is to make healthy eating a part of your life which is as easy as breathing, eating a whole cake in a day can't be classed as healthy eating as the world sees it, no matter what the cake is made of.
Mix your couscous with peppers, onions, etc. etc and again, it's ok because it's meal-time food. I'm sorry I can't explain any better than that really.
I hope you can see what I'm getting at, but if not, why not write to SW and ask for a proper explanation - I'm sure someone there could explain it better than me.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -

All I do is take a jar of passata, chop up some mushrooms and onions, put them in a pan and simmer till it thickens and reduces a little. It's lovely and it's free and can be used on pasta or over meatballs so works for both plans.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
Hi All
My question for the day is.......
How do I syn homemade bread, Is what I really want to do is be able to count as healthy b now and again (i don't eat much bread anyay) for when i feel like some eg on toast.
I usually make it with 75%wholemeal and 25%white flour........
I occasionaly do a half and half or a full white for the kids but I don't eat these ones.
with the syn calculator you need to know the fats etc..... Now my homemade bread is far, far healthier than anything that is shop bought so i'm sure it would be fine but would like to be 100%!!!!
Mel xUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.0 -

I would add loads of garlic to this too but that's just me! Basically through anything you want in - sometimes I use up leftover veg too, so passata, onion, mushrooms, leftover cauliflower/green beans and garlic - YUMMY!0 -
