I've heard of folk paying their Council Tax in coppers just to p off a Council who've upset them. Not sure if they'd definately take them though.

Another way of getting rid of coins is to find someone on the local school PTA and ask if they would ever like to buy some of your change jar! I always needed lots of change before the school fairs, fortunately the local PO would happily both give me change and let me pay it all back in again afterwards! But I did do the PTA banking with A&L at the PO, so they did know me.

No use this summer, but Christmas, Easter and June are good times for this ploy.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Looks like the kids are going to have healthy accounts for a while then - LOL

I've been saving in a whisky bottle for a few years now and it's nearly at the top - Yeay!!! I've been adding a few 50ps and pound coins in as well to top it up at the end of the week - when it's purse emptying time.

I don't really understand this, as I've never had any problems with taking change into banks. I took £183.00 in just a couple of weeks ago (Barclays).
I'd bag it up, fill in the deposit slip and just start handing it over the counter. Act like it's nothing unusual. Any grief and I'd raise merry hell. Ask for the manager, tell them you'll close your account immediately if they refuse to allow you to make a deposit into your account. Don't be bullied, and don't take no for an answer. Make a stand! Grrrrr!
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • There should be no problem with paying into an account at a 'real' bank but it is these pretenders like Halifax and Abbey which are the problem. Their tills customer service is just like the bad old days when they were building societies.
You would be amazed how many people come into branches with loads of change who do not bank with us but with a few prompts admit to banking with H and AN.This does have a detremental effect on customer services for our own customers and they would be refused.

The coinstar machines are appearing in most supermarkets now a days. You pay a % which goes to charity. The remaining amount is given to you in the form of a voucher which you can then spend in the shop or ask customer services to give you the cash. I got about £60 back once after pouring in all my coppers, so it's quite worth it.

I used to work in a bank and our queues were always a lot shorter than the others in town. We used to get people bring in their change and even bills when you used to be able to pay bills at any bank, even when they did not bank with us. If we refused to take change or payments and told them to go to their own bank they would get really shirty and complain that they would have to wait ages to be served in their own bank whereas we would deal with them immediately. We were then told to ask them whether they would like to open an account with us, and the reply was normally no because 'they were happy with their own bank'. Daft really.

When the system changed about bill payment that got even more strange. We would often get people come in with Barclays cheques to pay a Barclaycard and get really cross when we refused to take it. We had one customer who insisted that banks were state owned and we had to take anything she bought in, yet she wouldn't change her Barclays bank account as she had been with them for ages and didn't want the hassle.

I never understood why people expected banks to do things for customers of other banks, after all if someone wanted to pay their M and S chargecard bill they wouldn't expect Debenhams to take it, would they?

  • If your BANK won't BANK your money, I'd go to another one and open an account there, on the understanding that you'd be opening it with your change!

I had about 20 bags of change to put into my account recently and phoned the branch to say that I'd need to come in with bags of change at lunchtime. Was that a problem? She said it was a transaction like any other and it was fine.

At the counter, a woman at the window next to me remarked very loudly, 'I have some change to bring in. OBVIOUSLY lunch time is not an appropriate time to do it. Could you tell me when I should bring it in. She was looking at me (and my son's buggy) very pointedly when she said it. The lady at the counter said,

'Madam, it is a transaction like any other we deal with. When you choose to conduct your business is entirely up to you.'

How I smiled as the woman glared at me and stamped off! I was at the window no longer than anyone else. It shouldn't be a problem.

Hats off to the woman at the HSBC!
