Absolutely disgusted - Need advise pls..

Hi all,

Not sure what borad to post this on, so you might see this post elsewhere!

Hubby and I have saved up a couple of hundred pounds just by sticking loose change in a big bottle, we have bagged it up and decided to put the money towards a holiday, but no !!!!!! will accept bagged change! One of my banks said two bags a day only (Oh, so that's a £1 in change then.. ) and my other bank said 5 bags a day.

So that means a trip to the bank every day, using up petrol and PAYING to park to deposit a pound each time, which defeats the object of "saving"..

I thought the Post Office might accept this change? But apparantly not...

I think its a disgrace, how can they refuse legal tender?

Can anyone suggest anywhere that will take my bagged up coins?

I have had this problem before, and we were trying to pay in about £20 of 1p, 2p and 5p coins, initially they were snotty, but I asked to speak to the manager, and threatened to pull my account from them.

The alternative is that in some ASDA stores there is a machine that accepts the coins and gives you it in larger denominations, however it does take a percentage, so it may be just as well to pay the parking and go and see the manager at the bank.

    Hope this helps

Hi thanks for that... We don't have an ASDA here, then again.. You just gave me an idea, we have an amusement arcade here.. They might take it!! (She hopes!!!)

Failing that, good idea about threatening to pull my a/c... Thanks.

sainsbury's near me has a machine that counts it and gives you a receipt to swap at the till, not sure if it takes a percentage as a charge though

Thanks for that, I will look in to it.
  • Not sure if this will be of any help, but our local Asda has a machine where you can put your loose change into it to get notes back

Not sure if there would be any charge involved

Are you trying to change coins for notes?

What about simply paying the coins into your bank account, and then withdrawing the money later?

They are called coinstar machines, I think, and charge about 6% last time I looked. Double check that they don't give you a store credit, think I remember someone saying that they give you some kind of voucher for whichever shop you are in rather than actual cash.

Makes no odds, either way, they only accept "X" amount per day! Ridiculous huh?

Thanks for that Cozzie... I just rang Sainsbury's and they said that their machine charges 7%.. Which I think is a rip-off.. But hey,it's an option.
