If your Sainsburys is handy to get to, you really should consider having a go at the full basics range, sb44. In our experience it is, on the whole, absolutely fantastic value for money and beats the other supermarket's value ranges hands down on quality. We used to be brand name snobs but had a 'go' at basics after reading this thread. One of our better financial decisions - we just can't believe how little our shopping costs now and shudder when we think of all the money we've 'thrown away' over the years! And in most cases the basics products are actually lower in fat/sugars/salt than their brand name rivals so don't believe the snobs who say you're buying rubbish.

Well, the the only thing I have bought and not liked were the frozen peas but we have tried a small sample of other stuff which we have liked:

    chocolate digestives
    shortbread fingers
    peanut butter
    sandwich pickle
    tea bags
    part baked baguettes
    curry sauce

    I think that is it.

    :D
  • Their dips are lovely too - 4 for 80p (Mexican style, yoghurt and cucumber, garlic and chive and cheese and onion I believe they are). Very tasty and not at all like the asda smartprice ones that we can't stomach. We used to buy the Asda ones that are 2 for £1.50 and now we can get like 8 dips for the same price :)

The only problem is it's not resealable (we like it on jacket spuds etc) but foil solves that.
    BRB!

  • And I agree with the poster above me that the part bake rolls are lovely too :)

Oops, I had forgotten that I had tried those too, yep, they were lovely.

My partner and I are migrating to the Basics range. From being total TTD & Organic snobs we are both surprised that good food doesn't have to cost a fortune.

    Here are our current Likes:
    Young Leaf Salad
    Tortilla Chips
    Part Baked Baguettes
    Battered White Fish (Frozen)
12" Cheese & Tomato Pizza - We customise this with basics peppers, olives and salami
    Vodka
    Mozzarella Ball
White Chocolate - Exactly like Milky Bar!
    Smoked Salmon trimmings
    Cornflakes
    Orange Squash
    Fresh Orange Juice
    Large Peeled Prawns
    Tinned Peeled Tomatoes
    Tinned Kidney Beans
    Potato Rings
    Black Pitted Olives
    Frozen Chips
    Peanut Butter
    Croissants
    Midget Gems
    Tinned Tuna....

In fact the only thing that we have tried and don't like is the Tomato Pasta Salad Pot which tasted very artificial and a bit "Fizzy"... The Salsa did wasn't very good, but that could have been my snobby predisposition talking - I will have to try this again!

I'm loving how much money the basics range is saving me! :T
  • There's nothing more satisfying than a big pea IME. :D

    I love double entendres! :rotfl::T:rotfl::T:rotfl:
    :jFlylady and proud of it:j
  • We got round to trying the midget gems and caramel toffees this week and have to say they are delicious, who could moan for the price. The midget gems tasted nicer than the branded ones and not has hard. :j

Also bought the Basics frying steak at the weekend, 3 huge slabs for £2.79 they would easily feed 6 people on a tight budget (or 6 meals). I cooked mine in the oven with onions and gravy, lovely with some yorkies.

  • Today we had the basics tinned rice pud, lovely with a dollop of jam on top. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Also a basics 4 pack of pain au chocolate. Could not tell these from any other brand. Lush with a nice cup of coffee and only a quid. 70p cheaper than their normal own brand.

Agreed, the rice pudding is another absolute billy bargain (approx 75% cheaper than Ambrosia. I mean, how can that be justified?). We normally have it with a tin of basics pineapples pieces and it makes a delicious dessert. Total cost? 31p :D
