Munching on a basic bar of milk chocolate as I type.....very yummy! Not bad for 27p I think it was for a large bar. (100g)Wins for 2022: Hydratem8 Water bottle, diary, flowers, Good food show tickets, childrens books x3,
Thanks to all who post the comps & please let the comping fairy sprinkle dust on my entries!0 -
I bought some of the basic tinned tomatoes and was really impressed - good chunky pieces of tomato with lots of thick juice. Often the 'value' tinned toms are really watery but these weren't. Defintely be buying those again.0

I used to buy these when they were 18p per tin, but now refuse to buy them having been almost doubled in price (33p at last look) for exactly the same contents. I now buy a jar of pasatta for 77p, which I can stretch to make three separate dishes (6 servings), whereas I would have used one tin per dish.
Thanks to this thread I trialled the frozen chocolate fudge cake (80something p) - yum! I also fancied a change from the basics choc digestives so went for the ginger biscuits instead and they are also really good.0 -

There's a knack to separating tea bags. I used to work in a cafe in the early 80's before the days of single tea bags.
I'll try to explain.
If you open the sainsburys box there's two set of tea bags at each side. Pick up one full set and aligned them if they're not already aligned. Then, using both hands in a mirrored like fashion, place all your fingers under the bags and your thumbs on top but sort of parallel to the perforations and then bend the bags downwards slowly. They should separate without splitting.
I hope that helps.0 -
I've become a Sainsburys convert, esp the Basics range. Used to shop at ASDA but get just as cheap a shop here but find alot of the fresh stuff such as friut & veg lasts longer than 2 days:rolleyes:
Eating a Basic's Ice Lolly as I type - 47p for 10, ideal as I am pregnant and craving Ice Lollies and they are really nice, freezer will be full of them in summer :T
For dessert tonight we have Basics Strawberries with Basic Strawberry Whip.
The sausages are great in Toad in the Hole (made with Basics Batter Mix) as mentioned earlier, they do stick, but don't taste cheap, OH prefers them over Richmonds, ideal freezer filler!!
Mini Jam Rolls are another regular in the shopping trolley at 30p, as are the tinned peaches due to them being in fruit juice, not syrup.2013 wins: Persil Bunny0 -
The basics ready meals aren't so bad. For 75p the salmon fish pie is great and you get lods of mash. I know some people will say this is rubbish but I prefer the creamy mash to the creamy sauce!
The basic chocolate bars (circa 27p) are really good for cooking - they melt down nicely for cake toppings and they actually have fewer artificial nasties in them than the branded ones (organics excepted!)0 -
I'm a recent Sainsbury convert and love it. I do find most of the basic stuff better than it's equivalent in Tesco. And one major difference is that Sainsburys seem to have the stock and I can buy my whole weeks shopping, until Tesco where I seemed to always leave with around only a third of what I needed.
I have however found out the Sainsbury basic mixed fruit jam is not so great. The Lidl version is much better and I believe the same price (or within 1p).
Got the own brand lemon curd and this was not great either.
Both seem a bit dry.
Still thumbs up to Sainsburys for the most part.0 -

I'm actually converting from buying Waitrose own brand for most things to Sainsbury's basics after a fairly... educational look at mysupermarket which pointed out I'd be saving £240 a year by doing so. My eyes have been opened, and this thread has been equally helpful.
But the only two things I have so far:
Cat litter - the cat sh*ts in it and it seems to clump better than Catsan, while being about a quarter of the price.
Pint glasses - cheap and seemingly quite strong, I likee.0 -
I don't shop at Sainsburys as theres not one near me, but my parents do. Mum bought their scotch eggs once, when I was visiting. They were vile, although some of their other stuff seemed fine.
I may try an online shop sometime.0
