Have tried the basics salmon bits, 88p and we love it ( even dd1 who hates salmon) only downfall is i shoulda got 2 packs!
    coleslaw is really nice
cereal bars are good for the kiddies.
the rice pudding was gone as soon as it hit the bowl.

We've not tried the tuna or peaches yet but thumbs up for sains. am totally converted also the kids love the traffic light guide on the basic packaging,

Hiya :) We mix the Basics smoked salmon trimmings with some Basics cream cheese - chuck them both in a bowl, mix together with a fork, add a bit of lemon juice and black pepper, result is a yummy filling for sandwiches (or baguettes even - Basics of course :D)

  • well, i finally sampled some of the packet of basics instant porridge which had been lurking in the back of my cupboard.

I have only one thing to say and that is 'yuck'.

It had a bizzarre taste, weird consistency (reminded me of wallpaper paste ) and I am surprised because I had thought that ready-brek type stuff was all made from pretty much the same ingredients and so presumed the taste was alike across brands.

I'll be sticking with sainsburys own-brand 'hot oat' cereal instead.

I used asda for years for my smartprice items but they opened up a sainsburys and the basics are just a much best quality product alltogether.

    So far i have changed

    tinned sweetcorn
    peanut butter
    sandwich pickle
  • I like the curry sauce in glass jars but the price is erratic. It reminds me of chip shop curry sauce from back home. They were 4p each last year but have since seen them as "high" as 26p. 2 ways to use:
Mix a dollop with mayonnaise for coronation chicken sauce
    or
Throw into casserole pot with some chicken, 1/2 jar water and some cous cous for a Morrocan style stew (I know it's curried but it seems to work!).

Hummus is new on basics range in past month. Tastes ok at first but goes off quick because no plastic lid. Fizzy hummus... bleugh.

Natural yoghurt ok but again no plastic lid.

Could you buy the next brand up just the once, and then save the plastic lid to wash and reuse - are the tubs the same size? Failing that, what about those plastic can lids for cat food and the such like, would they fit?

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
  • Have been trying lots of basics ranges.

    Cashew nuts are great.
    Peanut Butter, very good.
    Instant Noodles. great for kids
    Choc Chip cookies, lovely.
Beans and pork sausages, surprisingly good at 36p for a large tin.
    Baking potatoes. excellent.
    Grapes (when avaialable) very good.

Only thing i really wouldnt buy again is the Instant Choc Whip dessert. really not good!
  • Also.............I wouldnt bother with the basics condoms............well not for another 9 months.
  • Individually wrapped milk chocolate digestive bars are great.
  • Hi EC, they are about £1 for 9 biscuits. great for lunchboxes. ;-)

Exactly what we have found! And in many cases healthier than the branded/own brand alternative. We love the traffic light system on all the Basics products, it makes it very easy to gauge how healthy/not they are.
