Probably already been mentioned but Basics Hot Chocolate is lovely, about 66p a bag - bit annoying it doesn't come in a jar, but at that price you can't complain, and the cocoa and sugar used is Fairtrade to boot! I keep it at work as a change from tea/coffee and for when I need a choc hit. Definitely highly recommended. :money:0

Toilet Tissue - £1.29 12 rolls
Probably one of the ones to avoid. Very thin, so you end up using twice as much so a bit of a false economy there. Also found it quite rough. I think bog roll is one of those items you're allowed to treat yourself on. Go for the cushioned quilted name brand.
Smoked Salmon Trimmings - 87p per pack
I can't decide on this one. Smoked salmon is quite an elegant food (or at least it should be) so the idea of trimmings/cut-offs is quite a strange one. It's not great but it's not awful. A few dark bits and even the odd bone when I tried it (one or two, not lots) - It really is a judgement call.
Agree re loo rolls - we don't use vast amounts so the potential savings compared with regular brands is little. However, cushioned/quilted is more likely to lead to needing the drain rods.
salmon - not for use where you want proper slices but great for fish pies, thin pieces on canapes, or in scrambled egg.0 -
basics shower gel has gone up today in my local sainsburys, was only 10p now 30p. think a trip to tescos coming soon to stock up:rotfl: given up on tesco do a lot os boots offers. but weekends are now in orange trackside b. lol

Bought the basics fabric softner and powder today, seem to do the job. Also got basics peanuts, sweetcorn and chips which we've not tried before...will report back!Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

i didnt like the basics teabags
but the white chocolate is gorgeous
crumpets are fine too

basics beans were ok0 -
I have started buying a few more essentials from the basic range again:-
Chopped toms (in a carton now and stack great in the cupboard)
Kidney beans (great source of protein for me and add to chilli's and couscous)
Sweetcorn (ideal for 2 people or on toast pizzas)
Pineapple (13p in juice)
Stock cubes (soups and couscous)
Cream of Tom soup (I use 1 heinz and 1 basics)
Veggie Soup (Slow cook chops in it and makes a nice gravy for meal too)
Orange Juice (DD doesnt like bits and she thinks its the posh one!)

I used some of the basic 'cooking bacon' - 1st pack had 2 thick bacon chops in it. This made a bacon casserole in my slow cooker for 5 of us. Still bit of bacon left to have for sarnie. All for less than £1.600

With apologies if this one has already been covered, but purchased some basics rice pops the other day which are REVOLTING.
The Sainbury's own brand ones are fine taste just like Kelloggs, but the basics ones are foul.
I know I can return them, but wanted to warn others.
Have to agree with this - when we bought them, we ended up browning them under the grill to try and make them palatable. We even tried rice crispie cakes with them and had to throw them out!Sealed Pot Challenge - member 1109:j0 -
I'll add a few...
Basics sausages 8 for 48p(so 6p a sausages), from the chilled section. Their not amazing but for 6p a sausage they're really not bad at all, same sort of stuff you'd get a lot of B&B's, very good value.
Basics white chocolate, fine, just as same as milky bar, maybe even better to me..0 -
I have tried a few basics items now and have been quite pleased.
Basics yogurts- 4 little pots- comes in strawberry and peach flavour, were 29p. They were ok, not as fruity as I would have liked but totally acceptable as a quick snack.
Basics smoked salmon trimmings- bought these and made it into a salmon and cream cheese sauce for pasta. Was delicious, you wouldn't have thought it was basics. Really good value for money!
Basics pasta shapes- these were ok. They took ages to cook and seemed a bit hard even when they were done. A good product for when you are low on money but wouldn't buy these regularly I don't think.
Basics soft cheese- seems to be to be like any other soft cheese. It may not have the texture and taste of branded cream cheeses but ok on bagels and for cooking.
Basics milk chocolate- at 30p they are really good value for money. Half a bar is gone already and I only bought it yesterday!
Basics lettuce- like any other lettuce, stayed fresh for a week.
Basics yogurt- the one in a big pot. It's really creamy and tastes like any other plain yogurt I have even tasted. Can't tell the difference really.
Basics crumpets- 35p for 6, not much less than Sainsbury's own brand but every penny counts, right? Taste is fine, they are a bit soft but once they are toasted they are good.
I am sure I have bought more than this but can't remember just now. Might be back with more soon!March GC £122.25/ £120
April GC £109.83/ £650
