    Woahhhh!

You've just taken me back nigh on 40 years..... My Mum and Dad were from oop north. And when me and my siblings were v. little, times were 'ard.

I remember with serious affection the soup and chips Mum would sometimes give us four kids during the school holidays for lunch. From what I recall, it was a packet dried veg soup mixed up and boiled with proper home made chips popped into the liquid at the last moment.

Loverly! Don't knock it until you've tried it!

When I was oop north they served curry sauce on fish and chips which I thought was equally revolting. Whilst visiting Winnipeg and eating in a "Typical English Restaurant" they served fish, chips and mushy peas with gravy all over. When I queried this, they told me that it was typically English. I have never heard of anyone having gravy over their fish.

Never heard of either of these in Liverpool
  • Its the same here, and I'm midlands born and bred. Heinz Tomato Soup with big fat chunky home made chips in it, left long enough to go soggy and served with doorsteps of thickly buttered bread - Ambrosia!!!

On a different note I do have an aquantance who doesn't cook sausages per se, he boils them and eats them that way.I have to say the thought of it make me retch but I suppose they are cooked after all.
Even so I couldn't eat a "raw" bratwurst either but they too are boiled. The colour is all wrong to my way of thinking.......

Anyone had the veggie pasty from Greggs? It's a soup pasty basically :)

  • I'm from the Midlands and we called it 'chip soup' just to be different :D We had a bowl of Heinz tomato soup with chips in the middle. You had to eat them quick before they got too soggy, lol. I've not had it for about 30 years.

All this reminds me of Clarkes pies in Cardiff .......really soup pies.
Not quite the same as soup and chips but when we went on a family canal holiday once on the leeds and liverpool canal ( oop north) we bought freshly cooked pork pies from a pork pie shop. They smelt sooo.. good had to eat them straight away. Didn't think and the jelly was gravy so as soon as you took a bite the liqour ran down your chin what a waste as they were to die for. Shall have to try the soup and chips now sound great.

Soggy chips don't really float my boat. Disgusting. :D I like em crisp and crunchy.

Gravy over fish sounds equally disgusting. :D Give me tartare sauce anyday.

I have this. Big bowl of chips to dip in the soup. Mushroom soup is the winner for me - providing it's freshly homemade:D
