im origanally from leigh near wigan but recently took this to the outskirts of lincolnshire and anywhere else my oh job sends us.
Definitely a "local" thing. I too am from near Wigan and always used to have soup & chips as a kid. My wife's from near Preston and has never heard of it.
Funnily enough, had chips & vegetable soup for the first time in decades over the weekend.
Mind you, we do have some strange things in Wigan...."pie floater" being a pie in a bowl of soup. Or my favourite, "chips, babbies 'yead and pey whet" (otherwise known as steak pudding, chips and the juice from mushy peas, the "babbies 'yead" referring to the pudding looking somewhat like a baby's head)I really must stop loafing and get back to work...0 -
Never heard of it! (I'm in North Yorkshire btw)Not heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

Mmmmm, wonder if I was English in a previous life?
I LOVE Heinz Cream Of Chicken soup poured over a big bowl of chips. I'm in my 40's now and all my life people have thought I was weird. Obviously not the norm in Scotland then.0 -
My OH loves Heinz tomato soup on top of chips. I always thought it was strange, but it actually tastes good!
When we were younger we knew my mum had no money for food when the meal for tea was soup on top of pasta, or even skinter, pasta with gravy on.0 -

Ok I was born in Denton, moved to Bramhall, then Wilmslow and then south to St Albans. My mum was from Ardwick but told everyone she came from Lower Openshawe (it was posher back in the 1950's)
The answer to the op is yes, we had soup over chips. Roast Chicken on Sunday, chicken, egg and chips or Chicken Curry or Chicken Risotto on a Monday, Chicken Soup with dumplings on Tuesday and then leftover soup over chips on Wednesday. The soup would have solidified somewhat by the Wednesday evening but goodness it was good.
However, we did have chips with most things and unfortunately I am following family tradition, that is when we do have Risotto or Lasagne we also have chips but then we don't have chips on a regular basis. Mainly because we don't have a traditional roast on Sundays.
I love a roast but my husband can take it or leave it.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

I think I may be ill.. I have never heard of anything so gross in my life.. lol
My children gip at the mention of gravy.. they don't like chips and the thought of having soggy food on your plate..well.. that's just not natural.
Chips with ketchup.. fair enough.. I can almost stomach that
Chips with mushy peas.. fine so long as they aren't touching each other!!
SOGGY FOOD on purpose??????????
*shudder*

I am in the North West but never heard of that one. Have heard of 'Kirby cuisine' which is Pot Noodle on chips......bleurgh
Yuk...never heard of that, I won't be popping round for tea:D
We used to have left over hotpot served over chips when we were wee. (I say hotpot, it was corned beef hash without the corned beef, just veg and stock and something to bulk it out, times were hard!).

I'm Northern and i've never heard of it, but it sounds good.I'd have to dip chips in though, I couldn't have soup poured over them:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"
