I'm looking at building myself a new PC soon, and a retail version of the OS is going to cost more than the motherboard and CPU (even the OEM version is half the price of a higher end CPU).
In the spirit of this site (ie money saving) why not look at an OS other than Windows for your new PC?

While I liked some features of Vista when it came out it however is one hell of a system resources hog.

I got fed up with it in the end and switched to another OS.

It's built for the latest computer hardware, put it in an old pentium II or 3 with 256mb of memory it's a piece of junk, bung XP in a quad core with 2Gb 1066mhz memory it's gonna fly, but XP does not have built in anti-spyware and other hidden stuff like Vista, Vista SP1 is supposed to run as fast as XP SP2, with anything that is slower only about half a second slower, big deal, as if your going to notice.
Explorer 8 is coming out soon, so that may stop people saying how rubbish explorer 7 is.
Windows 7 is on the drawing board too, I've seen a couple of screen shots, one of which was of the new system restore, which gives an option to reset everything to the first install.

I had it on a brand new Dell Dual Core System. 1Gb Memory, dedicated graphics cards etc.

I did compare it to my other Dell Dual Core system with similiar specs which was running XP and there was only a small difference initially in performance. It was a major memory hog though.

Over time it got worse and worse. The constant hardrive churning away due to Vista's indexing started driving my up the wall. Ridiculous amounts of services running in the background which i manually turned of in the end to speed things up.

Bootup times and shutdown greatly increased once I installed my general software on it. nothing too heavy was loading on startup.

Using large portions of memory for just being on!

I had major problems with windows updates not installing properly and in the end got fed up with the thing when it took me virtually 2 days trying to install security updates that had built up over a few weeks.

I'm glad I got rid of it. Life is easier now and I don't feel inclined to punch my screen:D

Actually it isn't. Those saying it uses loads of RAM also neglect to tell you that a lot of that is used for superfetch which speeds up application loading by storing commonly used programs in RAM that otherwise sits there doing nothing.

It's not a memory hog. Google superfetch and go educate yourself.

    Kiss my ......

It is still hogging alot of memory for normal system use. giving it a name in this case "superfetch" doesn't change those circumstances.

Sorry, but it is not a resource hog at all. Using RAM that would otherwise not be used is not 'hogging' it - it is intelligent use of it.

Also I note the setup you tried it on - I use it on a 12-18 month year old Dell Dual Core, but with 2GB, and it flies along.

Your obviously used to some slow machines because I never thought Vista flew along.

Of course its a resource hog, Do you know how many ridiculious amounts of services that are switched on that are not required from standard installation. I turned quite a few of them off manually as I didn't need them.

Your point about the memory proves my point. 2GB to run it smoothly because at one 1GB it hogging the whole memory on just running the system.

I used to barely have any memory left on my basic use on 1GB and you know what starts happening then, it starts paging to the harddrive slowing it down because it doesn't have any free memory.

I don't think its intelligent use of memory to load it with applications that you used on previous days but have no intention of using on that day.

Why make the computer do all the extra work if its not required for minimal effects of speed if any, throw something heavy at it and then its working away try to free memory up.

The contast churning away of my computer even when it was not being used drove me mad!

Actually, yes, I do know that lots of services are 'not needed' for the majority of users. I, too, turn them off.
Your point about the memory proves my point. 2GB to run it smoothly because at one 1GB it hogging the whole memory on just running the system.

Not sure which point it is proving, other than it doesn't run on crappy underpowered computers.
I used to barely have any memory left on my basic use on 1GB and you know what starts happening then, it starts paging to the harddrive slowing it down because it doesn't have any free memory.

If you really need it, get more RAM. Why do people expect a new operating system to run as well as a 7 year old one on the same hardware?

Well I can honestly say that my system does not constantly churn away, nor does Home Basic on 1GB on my parents PC.
