tesco fuel scam maybe?

Additives matter.
Just because fuel tankers fill up at the same refinery does not mean they are receiving the same 'finished product'. Every customer (Esso, BP, a supermarket etc) has a different additive mix which is delivered into the fuel at the point when the tankers are being filled. The additive mix most certainly effects things such as fuel economy.
Supermarket fuel is cheap for a reason.0 -

I was under the impression that it was cheaper due to bulk buying and high volume of sales, plus supermarkets aggressive pricing policies to be the cheapest in an area undercutting other traders and increasing their turnover, rather than the product itself.0 -
Exactly. They're not going to transport fuel all the way from Teeside to London when there's refineries that are nearer.
Neither do the big boys. Shell and BP have a deal where in the north of the country the fuel sold at BP garages is actually Shell and its the other way round in the south.
Spent a day at Stanlow a few weeks ago and asked what the situation was with supermarkets. THey either buy direct from the refinaries and add thier own additives either at the time of filling the tanker or by adding the additives to the forecourt tanks. Quite a bit of fuel is also bought on the open market (from Holland), generally the crap left at the bottom of tanks.0 -
So how do you explain last years situation when Tesco stuffed so many customers cars with their duff fuel.?
Explanation as follows: Last year Tescos along with several other supermarkets sold fuel that was contaminated with too much silicon. This was an accident. Adding too much silicon is not a money saving (sic) conspiracy by Tescos because the people who brew the fuel for Tescos know this contaminates sensors and people will notice therefore it would be a very poorly executed scam. The more realistic view is that it must have been an accident.
The original poster is implying there is a conspiracy by Tescos to defraud it's customers which is considerably different. Like I said an easy jibe that will be taken up by dullards who like conspiracy theories. Did you hear the one about the moon landings being faked?0 -

Indeed, so why use them again? why take the risk that it may happen again? their fuel is rarely cheaper than my Shell garage anyway.:rolleyes:0 -
I've never seen so many people waste thier time on such a rediculus conspiracy theory.
I used shell for 2 years, 75k miles, not a problem. All i got was them messing me around with pluspoints....
I now use tesco, my father always has, must amount to 300k miles. They never mess up clubcard points.
Both vans have never missed a beat, and recover the same mpg from both tesco and shell.0 -

I remember a few years ago when Shell had a problem with an additive in their fuel which caused engine problems for a lot of motorists and people stopped buying it, consequently I will not use Shell unless I can help it.
I hardly think that the risk is any greater with supermarkets than any other garage.0
