hi just read these messages and was inspired to ring up aol, been a customer for 5 years. i rang 08002006244 and asked for the mac code.

he asked the reason i wanted to leave andi said there are better deals on the market, he said hel see what he can do.

i was paying 17.99 for silver aol.

now paying 14.99 (i live in a very rural area, and said if i ever moved to ring immediatly back up and he can do it for 9.99 pm)

and there sending me a free wireless router worth £60. not bad for a 4 minuete call.
What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots
  • Thanks for advice. AA reduced from £141.00 to £92 told them that I wanted to cancel . Will have to haggle next year to reduce .:j

Thank you so much all who have contributed to this thread - Have just phoned AOL cancellation dept and asked if there was anything they could do with my monthly cost as I am not working at the moment. VERY nice man with a lovely Irish accent said without a blink we can give you the top BB package for £9.99 a month for ever and next month free bacause of the problems they have been having - my BB has been fine! Also asked about the deal that new customers are getting and he said yep, no problem - if you want that you can have it and went through all the info and has emailed it to me for further info.

In fact I am going to post this in the 5* service as well!

Just need to try SKY now. ;)
  • I cancelled Virgin this week.

    I am currently on:

    XL TV
    Fastest broadband
    Sports/Movies

    Currently paying £61 a month.

Nice girl on the phone but seemed quite disinterested in my obvious attempts at trying to get an offer to stay.

She suggested I remove some of the tv packs. I want to keep them all so that was a no.

She then offered a free phone line. Well, me and my partner both have mobiles with perfect signals from home and free calls to everyone. So not needed.

She then offered a free phone line and bizzarely to remove the Sports/Movies combo and would reduce the bill by about £9 a month. That was nonsensical as if I removed Sports/Movies myself I would save about £20 a month!!

I went ahead with the cancellation on Thursday. Haven't had a phone call from them yet to offer anything better but will post details here if they do (fingers crossed).

Does anyone know what sort of timescale I could wait (within the 30 cancellation days) before they will ring me with an offer?

Make sure you speak to the customer retention department.. They are the ones with the deals. Have a look at:

  • Thanks to reading this thread I rang AOL and asked if they could do a better deal than my present plan. Without asking for any reasons for my query, I was immediately offerred a reduction of £10/month and a wireless router. I was happy to take the saving for the cost of the call.

Many thanks to all who referred to AOL in this thread.

Sky are great for offering generous deals at the threat of leaving! I complain and threaten to leave regularly - say, three times every couple of years - and several of my family and friends do the same now, and always they offer a substantial incentive to stay with them.

Seems that the larger one's package, the more generous they are.

The trick is not to threaten to leave until you are talking to someone from their Customer Retention Dept - a department the existence of which they strongly deny - whose members have great discretionary powers to offer what it takes to keep your custom. Contract Termination Dept might get you to the right people. You'll know immediately when you get to the right person because the mood changes - they know how to listen!

Working for Sky, I know for a fact that this department is always open to customers. We just don't call it a retention department. All companies have one. I phoned orange to cancel and the guy answered the phone with 'thanks for calling orange retentions'.
  • I called Mint to ask about lowering their APR seeing that new customers got a premium rate they said they didn't do that so I left and got 12 months free APR on Barclaycard..result
