At the back of your computer you have line in, line out, and mic.
Line out simply means sound out
Line in is for tape recorders record players and keyboards etc
    Mic is for microphone

You have no sound because you have no drivers installed, the drivers tell the computer how the sound works and how many inputs outputs it has.
What frequencies the music is set too 44.1 wav mp3 audio 128 kbs etc, so without the drivers? The computer will not work.

The engineer should of made sure everything was working and installed properly before he left.
He seems to me as though he rushed the install and I would ring them up and complain.
You won’t be able to load the volume control panel because you have no drives installed.
Once the drivers install you will hear a thud and it will tell you to reset your computer.

Just look for your motherboard on the site and download the drivers, double click the file and it should run and install the driver.
That’s all you need to do, once the drivers are installed make sure none of the volumes settings are muted.
Put in a cd and play it, normally the line out is the middle connection or green one.

The wires from the CD player attaches to the motherboard, you always have two connectors for two CD players.
But these days the music plays down the ide cable, if your computer still doesn’t play with the drivers installed and the volume isn’t muted? Then the pc may be naffed.

It won't install the drivers, or if it does, no change.

I will wait to see what the engineer says on the 8th. I'm under warranty for another year, so not panicking too much.

Out of interest, any music files I d/l now and burn to CD Rom, will they have sound on the CD's once my PC is restored to natural health, or will they have no sound as my PC is not recognising any sound?

    Thanks...thought i'd ask before I wasted CD's

No they'll record just fine. The CPU does the file conversion not the sound card.

Shouldn't be this difficult. However I haven't been able to figure out yet whether you have a PCI sound card (separate card that plugs into a slot in your motherboard), or whether you are using the onboard integrated sound device that's built into your motherboard.

It's important to distinguish because if you have a PCI card then it's no use downloading the MSI integrated sound drivers. You would have to find out what make your pci card is and get the right drivers for that.

A pci sound card looks like this T777-1004b.jpg and plugs into a slot in your motherboard that looks like this plpci.jpg

Have you tried running the "Add Hardware Wizard" to see if the OS can detect your sound card that way?

You could also try going into System Information and look under "Problem Devices" to see if your sound card is listed there.

Once we can actually establish what your sound card is it should be a doddle to get the right drivers and get you sorted.

That PCI card looks like what I have in my machine.

Tried the hardware wizard, found 2 things - PCI multimedia was one of them. Installed but has a problem (code 28) needs drivers.

It went onto windows web update but asked me to put in my Windows ME disk as it needs some things (ks.sys being one of them)

Could it be that Windows did not install the sounds properly?

    OK - that helps.

Becuase it's a PCI card you need to get the manufacturer's drivers. Native drivers in ME won't do it.

Pull the card out and have a look on it to see if you can see if the make and model is marked on it.

    Okie doke.

Won't do it right away as I'm in the middle of something, but will do so if I feel brave enough later

    Thanks :)

You'll need to pull the card before you install the drivers anyway.

As I always tell folks, it's a lot easier to swop out a pci card than to change a 13 amp plug so don't worry.

Download Everest from here. Install and run. Look under multimedia> PCI/PNP audio this should tell you the card you have installed.

    Good luck.

Everest says VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (h)

System Info says VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller (WDM)

Pretty sure that's the drivers we d/l before
