I have been using my Panasonic bread maker for about a year now, with excellent results.

Usually we make a "Sandwich" loaf on timer so it's ready first thing in the morning.
Yesterday morning the loaf, instead of being well-risen and a nice "loaf" shape, was only about half the usual height and flat topped. The bread inside was quite doughy. I threw it away and put on another loaf using the "quick basic loaf" recipe. This produced an excellent well risen loaf of bread.
Last night I put another loaf on overnight and got the same flat soggy loaf this morning.

All three of these loaves used the same identical ingredients - from the same bag/packet/tub/bottle !

The only possible thing I can think of is the programme in the bread maker not being correct now.

Has anyone else come across anything like this before ? Would much appreciate any thoughts.

My loaf was an odd shape this morning - and it has happened ocasionally previously. I remember reading on an old thread that some people's play up in winter. The reason being the surrounding temp can vary - particularly overnight. Mine is located opposite a vent - and I think last nights winds chilled the outside of the maker (despite the fact I've covered the vent with paper). If the temp in your room changes much during the cycle it could be that. Why not try putting another loaf on for the full time today to see how it does with a steady temp?

my first thought was also was your BM in a draft overnight, with a programme with long rises it might be more vulnerable to drafts, temperature, than quick prog.
I've put my panny in a draft free corner of the kitchen.
The only failures have been due to old yeast.

what is the sandwich bread programme like? it's a long ( 5hr?) programme.
I mostly only use the quick programme.

I've used the basic setting to make non wheat free bread, but need to experiment more to get it right.
    good luck

The sandwich loaf is a 5 hr one. I have been making this loaf for months - this is what I don't understand - EVERYTHING is the same as before.
Two minutes ago I took a rapid basic loaf out of the BM and it is perfect ! Again the same ingredients. I use a mixture of white & granary flour and mix up enough for about 5 loaves at a time, so I know the flour is the same.

Once the machine has cooled down I will try a 5 hour loaf again, without the timer, just to see what happens.

    Strange !
  • I know this isn't strictly the right place, but I just spotted a Panasonic BM for £49.99 on Ebay if anyone's interested. It says it's new. (It's the model I have!) :)

Keep your eyes open if you have a clearance section in your Lakeland, I bought one from Amazon and went into Lakeland a week later and they had one for £50 because the box was broken.

OK, I've got one of these. It's an SD 253 (I think). Anyway, it has a thing on the top that's meant for seeds. you bung the seeds in and they drop in at the relevant time so that they're on the top. Except, whenever i use it, i just end up with steamed seeds! How do I get the bl**dy things to drop automatically onto the bread?

    All help gratefully received.

Not totally sure what you mean but the raisin/nut dispenser drops the stuff in during mixing not after mixing / baking to "seed" the top of the bread ?

To check it lift the lid and then lift out the seed tray. on the right hand side you will see a little black lever. Press it at the top and the bottom of the tray should open. If it does the tray is ok.......so maybe the machine is not pushing the button to release the tray ?

There are guidelines for using the tray on page 23 of the manual....so thats also worth a quick look.
