Why so much hatred for 4x4's & SUV's?

Sounded very much like; Me...Me..Me.. to me.
Funnily enough, that is exactly what I hear when the antis start whingeing on about safety. Rather than campaign to make their tin boxes safer though, they go for an easier target. If you truly wanted 4x4's banned on the grounds that they do more damage to you when they hit you, you'd also have to argue against buses, vans, lorries and anything else bigger than your car.
But that isn't the real reason at all, is it?0 -

Thats what I started this thread for, to get to the real reason.
Size & engine size & gas guzzling just don't cut it. As loads are not huge gaz guzzlers.
Is it some sort of snobbery? Are 4x4 drivers the new chavs, does our society need a victim they can pick on & look down upon?0 -
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes.
I have a 1994 Golf convertible and it has been the most reliable car ever until back in November driving back from Devon a puff of smoke came from the steering column - i took it into the garage and they checked it out - but couldn't find anything wrong since then it hasn't done it again until yesterday. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be????0 -

Maybe your golf was getting in the mood for the fireworks season, however given that he is only 13 years old, and thus unable to purchase fireworks legally, he managed to blag a smoke bomb from that dodgy corsa that lives next door. As far as yesterdays puff of smoke I havent got a clue maybe its a cry for attention, next thing ya know it'll be chewing your sofas and weeing on your clean washing.
Just a thought, oooh and before you ask no im not a mechanic.
all the best

Best to start a new thread :A Could also be worth asking places like here http://www.volkswagentalk.com/ A puff of smoke from the steering column sounds like an electrical fault to me - but that's only a guess.0 -

And they wonder why there is so much " hatrid " against them? ( OP's spelling, not mine ).
I've adjusted my typo.
I did see it but didn't think anyone would be petty enough to pick me up on it.
Actually I think its supposed to be rather bad form to remark on peoples spelling & grammar, unless absolutely relevant to the thread. Which this is not.0 -
Interesting debate
We have a 4 x 4 because we tow a caravan and am not sure why we are unpopular members of the community.
As far as I'm concerned we have a much lower carbon footprint by choosing to holiday in Britain rather than fly all over the world for our holidays.
We boost local economies and tourism in our own country, eat local produce etc
But because I work I have to do the school run in the Sorrento that we have as we only have the one car and hubby's workvan and even with the towbar on the back I've had notes put on my windscreen being rude to me because of the car I drive.
It is easy as the MPV we had before to drive and manoeuvre and I have never had a problem negotiating it around.
People need to be a little more tolerant of each other - what happened to freedom of choice?0 -

I honestly haven't encountered any problems in mine, but where I live (Surrey) they are very popular. There are loads on the roads, as I hit the country roads home, nearly half the other cars on the road seem to be 4x4's0
