I have been following this thread and I too am one of these evil female 4x4 drivers. I do not do any school runs and I must admit I do not see the point of these vehicles in the large cities but i would like to make some points. I live in a very rural area so between were I live (I was born there) and requiring a towing vehicle this is my best choice. However I do take mine into the city sometimes for hospital appointments ect. I am a care worker to the elderly, outreach and I am the most in demand due to my 4x4 as all the clients find it easier to enter/exit and carry wheel chairs. Due to my Discovery I can get to work when others fail due to bad weather, this can double my lists for the day but vunrable folk get seen, when my neighbours cannot get up the steep hill in ice at home I am the one who tows them up and yes I do use the vehicle in fields to feed horses. I am not a farmer but I still need one of these vehicles, and my 4x4 provides a critical service to the elderly yet I am a monster for owning one and yes I could buy a smaller car for the odd city use but then the clients cannot get in it and that's another vehicle putting a strain on the environment. I do not live on a bus route and due to interest I did the online act on CO2 test and between myself and OH we are half the national average for CO2 even with the evil 4x4.As to being a woman driver, unlike my partner I have a spotless driving record and know how to park unlike may small car owners who need two parking spaces!
Got a few customers just like you - and I love their land cruisers... they come in covered in mud...
I know I have a problem re the school run mum's, who sadly have use of some big vehicles - which did not help my mood this morning when I tried to stop for a paper on route to work, they park on the pavement, don't even use the shops and stand around for twenty minutes or so chatting, quite often in the road! Honest. Its dangerous, they block the road and visibilty for drivers.
I don't care what anyone drives to be honest - just have some common sense.
Idiots give people like you a bad name....Genie

so its not just round my area then, often see some women driving their husband's car twice round the block just to get a space outside the school gates and if not then park with 2 wheels up on the pavement so that others with prams cant walk get round them, whats wrong with parking down the next road and walking round and getting some exercise
Bet most of them live within 10 minutes walk anyway, lazy gets the lot of em.
I know what cars to ban. Those crappy 1 litre Saxo's and Corsa's that chavs drive. See http://www.yourcarisshit.com/index.asp for pictures.0 -
What a silly debate. Not calling anyone here silly, just the whole thing about 4x4s.
I mean what is a 4x4? A Fiat Panda 4x4? What about a Land Rover when it's set in 2-wheel drive mode? Or a 2-seat Porsche 911 Turbo that comes as standard with 4 wheel drive?
I can't help but feel that many of those who claim to be against 4x4s often also reveal they don't like powerful sports cars, or expensive luxury saloons either - which tends to reinforce the view that this has nothing to do with the environment or safety but is little more than the green-eyed monster shouting.
As to the question of whether anyone needs a 4x4 in a town or city? So what? I didn't realise we lived in a country with so little freedom that we have to now declare some kind of desperate need or national importance to every decision we take to buy something. Anyone who thinks that needing something is a pre-requisite to having something is either a hypocrite or a fool - and possibly both.
Could it be that the 'goverment' and all the little followers etc. - all the councils etc., that impose what seems like a new 'rule' every day? That is what is really getting all our goats. Being taxed for just about everything.
There is no freedom in this country and hasn't been for some time - we are puppets that are being told what to do and we have to obey, because they have created a law for so much now.
New tax on air coming out soon.... Pay to Breathe.
I don't have a 4x4 - but just the pure act of someone dictating to me, makes we want to go and buy one!Genie
