Personally I think we'd do better to ban all those wanna be racers in their golfs, peugots, novas etc... No I'm not saying ALL people who drive those are bad... but there are a few of them round here I wouldn't mind meeting whilst driving a VERY big 4x4! Overtaking on blind corners, forcing other drivers nearly off the road just to get another car in front - generally endangering everyone and thinking it's COOL! I ask you!
Yeah we have a 4x4 and OH drives it to work each day. However it gets used for fishing gear, golf equipment and most often and main reason for buying - it fits our VERY bouncy dog safely in the boot. Oh and it's only a 2 litre diesel and is better for the environment than all my previous cars!
Do we have it cos it's cool? I don't think anyone can call a Santa Fe cool... I'm afraid :) and it only takes the same space as any other car pretty much... unlike most BMWs, Mercs, even ford mondeos have a bigger area than a santa fe amazingly enough... :) It just looks bigger :)

Yup, mine's a not particularly 'cool' X-Trail. I must admit it does look quite shiny when it's clean (and I've chiselled the muck out of everywhere), but that's not very often...I must also admit that it has a not-exactly-off-roady black leather interior, but leather is a lot easier to get the cack off than cloth!!

It's quite a LOT smaller than my OH's Vectra Estate (or 'the hearse' as I call it).

In fact, that's quite a good example of the not-all-4x4s-are -huge-gas-guzzlers argument.

    206g/km, 37mpg = X-Trail Diesel

    187g/km, 36mpg = Vectra Petrol

Doesn't really make a lot of difference which rating any vehicle gets to be honest, they are only ever tested on dummies

My 4x4 doesnt attract the hatred that big 4/4s get, although I do only get 16-23 mpg, and I only go off road when I park on the curb.
And no-one will dictate to me what I will drive, I pay the bills.

The more Govt and do gooders dictate that they want these cars banned the more desirable an AMG G Class Merc looks :D

TBH I dont have a problem with any 4x4, they are no more badly driven than anything else on the road. The one type of car that I do have a problem with is kiddie carriers especially Citroen Picassos, usually driven by numpties who have no idea what their right foot was designed for.

4x4s safer – but more dangerous

    27 February 2008

    spacer.gif
spacer.gif • 4x4 drivers less likely to be in accident
    • Better view of road thought to be the reason
    • Chance of injury is greater in an accident, though

New research shows drivers of 4x4s are less likely to be involved in crashes, but when they are, injuries are more serious.

The survey was conducted by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) on behalf of Transport for London (TfL).

It found that the collision rate for 4x4s was 30% lower than that for other cars. This is believed to be because 4x4 drivers are higher up and have a better view of traffic, allowing them to react to incidents quicker.

However, a TfL spokesman said the study highlighted that pedestrians, in particular children, motorcyclists and occupants of small cars, were significantly more likely to be killed or seriously injured when in a crash with a large 4x4.

The report found that, for those hit by a large 4x4, there was a 26% chance of injuries, compared with a 22% chance when hit by a smaller off-roader. When hit by a family sized car, the rate of injury was 21%.

One thing I love about my 4x4 is I can do 30mph (the speed limit) through the village over the speed bumps without having to slow down at all, unless of course there is a car in front of me, then I have to crawl behind them.

Which speaks volumes about 4 x 4 drivers, the speed bumps are put there to slow traffic for the safety of all concerned, yet you brag about driving over them at 30 mph through a village !!!!!!!!!!!..

    The mind boggles.

30 mph is the speed limit, I am not exceeding it:rolleyes:

Unlike a lot of drivers of hot hatches when the schools out & on residential streets with children playing I do crawl.

So as I drive a small off-roader I am only 1% more likely to kill or seriously injure another.

But as drive a 4x4, I personally am 30% less likely to have an accident in the first place.

    So they are safer:D
