Family Holiday - in the dog house!

I think you are doing the right thing.
My mother was 60 last October. We arranged for my Dad to take her out for the afternoon, and got all her children (there are 4 of us) down to my parents' house in Kent, and my OH and our son. We also invited, without my mother knowing, her brother and sister in law, and my Dad's brother. My sisters and I each cooked a course, so we had a 3 course dinner, and my Dad bought some booze and got my mother home in time for her to get dressed up for dinner.
It didn't cost the earth, and she loved it.
You don't need to spend hundreds of pounds each. Your mother is utterly unrealistic expecting that to happen, and hard to please!
Edited to say - cooking was a challenge, because one of my sisters is a veggie, and the other is Coeliac, but we still managed LOL...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I know she's your mum but I get the feeling you've pretty much moved on past the need for her approval? If she is jealous of your dad then let it be HER problem. You have your own problems and I don't think she'll be reasonable about this so don't let it eat away at you. Speak to the nice sister and say thanks but no thanks.
I agree, what a sensible post! No-one needs to spend hundreds of pounds she hasn't got to show love to her family....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Hi there
Have just read your post and I feel for you. I think you need to be really honest and say you just can't afford it and leave it at that. Perhaps you will fall out with your family over this, for a short period of time, but this holiday sounds like it is going to be hell on earth and you really need to think about you, your DH and your debt!
Good luck
:heartpuls CG :heartpulsEver wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
I would just explain to them that you can't afford to go on holiday at the moment and buy a nice present for your dad.
That sounds a hell of a lot for two caravans and I dont see why you should pay for someone elses children, you could probably get a one bedroom caravean for yourself cheaper and not have to put up with the baby
My fiance has a sister that does this, she books holidays for the mam and wants everyone to contribute.
She also arranges parties and has everyone pay and makes out like she has paid for everything. We had bought her something for £50 for her 50th but then had to put in £50 for a party which was arranged by sister so I made a point one day of saying sorry if its not much but after we put in for the party we didnt have loads as she knew we were skint at the time. I was sick of her sister making out she had did it all and paid for everything.
There are six brothers and sisters so we wouldnt mind if we could afford it but it sometimes comes when we dont have much money and we have to say no.
Her other half made 6x more than us two combined but we were expected to put in the same amount for something she had chosen.Needing to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0 -

Hiya,
firstly, what a joke of a sister-in-law!!
Secondly, can you not book it yourself?? I mean, tell them you have found another site that is 5 minutes away, but cheaper, that you would like your space as well, but that you will meet them each morning????
You bend this time, and you will bend forever for them, stand for yourself, I assure you that you will feel better when £500 has gone towards your debt.
good luck0 -
Wow - just read this thread - a caravan holiday with that lot? No thanks!!
Think that is what you must say - love you Dad (& mam if you feel you must!) but we can't afford this just now.
You could arrange a very special night/meal for him/them at a fraction of the cost!!
I had a wonderful mum who always recognised that a) I was 10 - 14 years younger than than my brothers therefore not earing as much, b) only had 1 child as opposed to two so he sometimes got a little extra!
Please don't go on this holiday - how could you two possibly enjoy it?0 -
Hi
Sorry for the delay - been back forth to hospital and been burgled! I was told by my sister she wasn't going to speak to me. Then they needed to borrow a car my hubby is doing (being a mechanic really handy) and they need it to go on the holiday with. All of a sudden I'm no longer the black sheep!
We're looking to loan the car, but it did show me to look out for myself and stand my ground, wanted to thank everyone for the support!
