Have I got the job?!

Hi everyone!

I got a job with an Insurance company a while back and in my 2nd week with them I had a phone call from another company offering me a great opportunity with them... so, silly me decides the current job I have is crap and I really don't like it.. so I decide I won't go back and I will go for this job that they offer.

Well, I went for my 1st interview and that went great, got invited for a 2nd interview which was a 3 hr assesment in 3 parts. First part I passed just about, 2nd part passed no problem and 3rd part passed fantastically.. so they offered me a 3rd and final interview.

Had the interview last Tuesday and it seemed to go really well, I answered all the questions well and they commented how impressed they were with a suitability letter I had written in the assesment interview. When I gave my answer to a question they were very positive, saying ' excellent answer' or 'that's what we like to hear' etc etc

I asked in the interview when they would let me know, and he said 'it should be by the weekend'

Well, no phone calls or anything, and now i'm getting worried, I gave up my other job on the basis that I could attend all the interviews that the new job wanted..

I emailed the recruitment guy this morning who headhunted me from the company and havn't had a reply yet, although it is a monday morning and so he could be in a meeting or something.. but i'm proper stressing! This job seems so right for me, and they even asked me if I could do the hours requested, salary expectations etc, so I though it was in the bag..

Can anyone help me ease my mind?!

x

Now I feel silly for emailing AND ringing.. arrghhh.. why couldn't he tell me..

He sounded stressed, it is a monday morning tho..

I think it may have been a bad idea to completely dump your new/current job as that was secure. But then you wouldn't want to lie to your new/current employer so I can sort of understand.

I think you should quickly create more options for yourself unless you can get by with no job. Apply for every job you are willing to do while you have some spare time, if this job falls through you will have more options to follow up. Don't let it knock your confidence if you don't get this job, you sound very skilled and on the ball at the job you applied for so if you don't get this one you shouldn't have problems getting another one.

Good Luck! (Ps, I think phoning them shows initiative and a genuine interest in the job so I shouldn't worry)

    Thanks Tawecdl..!

Luckily for me I am not too desperate for cash at the moment, so I can afford to wait a bit, although I do feel a little stupid for ditching the old job, but then I knew I wouldn't like it, so I guess everything happens for a reason and all (well, that's what i'm trying to console myself with)...

  • most places have to tell the applicants that didn't get the job before they tell the person that did. so maybe *fingers crossed* they haven't been able to contact everyone else before contacting you. and maybe that's why he couldn't say anything this morning.

That's a good point.. I really hope so anyhow..

I struggle with sticking at jobs that I don't like, but this one seems particularly suited to me, and so if I don't get it i'm going to be pretty gutted.

I don't think I can say that about many jobs I have gone for..

    Fingers Crossed!

Not wishing to be devils advocate here, but I do interviews for my current employer, and we have a strict format that we must follow - even if it's apparent that the candidate is not suitable after 5 minutes, everyone gets the same level of professionalism from us as we would expect from them. After all, some of them have travelled a very long distance to meet with us.

It sounds as if you were a very strong candidate, but perhaps there were two or three strong candidates for a single job.

Normal procedure would be for the people who did the interviews to tell their bosses who they want for the job. Perhaps the big boss is busy; perhaps they want more information (perhaps to check references from previous employers and clear up any details that are not clear); perhaps they have to make sure that they have a budget to pay the new person's salary. (I once did a brilliant job interview; hear nothing; and when I eventually rang up they said that the vacancy had been cancelled because they couldn't afford to pay the new person!) Basically, anything could happen.

Usual practice would be to contact the preferred candidate first, and ensure that agreement can be reached on salary, start date, and any other details that need to be settled. Perhaps the preferred candidate decides to do something else, in which case the job can be offered to another suitable candidate. For that reason, unsuccessful people don't ususally get a rejection until the appointment has been finalised.

All that we know is that we when you spoke with the person who had interviewed you he was unable to offer you the job, and clearly found the conversation awkward. I would prefer to avoid that kind of conversation, and so would not telephone in that situation.
