Large bras - cheap and work?

Sorry I did not know where to ask this but some one must be able to point me in the right direction.

I have a large chest (38G) and it is starting to ruin my life both through appearance problems and back/neck problems. I went to Marks and Spencers last week to get properly fitted and ended up buying an rather expensive set of industrial scaffolding (nothing like pretty underwear!) So I go to my graduation which was filmed. I watched the film back the other day and I was devastated by the sheer amount of movement that was going on (looked like a bouncy castle) and the vastness that the new bra created (it looked like I had no upper body just chest!) It looked ok from my perspective but obviously not what others see. I asked my OH if that was normal and he said 'oh yes' and grinned. The expensive bra only survived one more wear. The stitching in the cup split when i next wore it and was quickly returned.

So I am now on the hunt for a large bra which a) keeps everything still (ish) b) offers some support c) reduces my chest d) looks pretty not like scaffolding e) not expensive been looking on internet and the costs are astronomical!

If anyone can point me in the right direction I was be so grateful.

  • I find that buying cheap when you need lots of support to be a false economy. Unfortunately it seems you have to pay for a good fit and enough support but it's definitely worth it! I get most of mine from Bravissimo, the freya range has some pretty bras which are well made and they occasionally have sales. At the moment you can get some of them for about £14.

I recently bought a bra from the Goddess range, from Debenhams' sale and I love it. I'm not as 'blessed' as you (40DD) but found it hoisted everything up to the right level, gave me a distinct pair of boobs rather than the mono-boob some bras give you, and I can tell you for sure there's no movement or bouncing going on whilst wearing it! It's a pretty pale pink and quite lacy. Might be worth a look in Debenhams? They also do the very nice Freya ones previously mentioned.
  • Okay, I hear ya! And fun it is not. I was wearing the wrong size bra (thanks to mothercare and M&S measuring me incorrectly) and I went to Bravissimo for a proper fitting. There is NO substitute for a decent, well fitting bra when you're lugging around big boobs. (I'm a 36G.) Mine are feeding bras so they aren't quite as supportive as their other ranges, but I am VERY happy with them. I can run. I am comfortable. Within an hour or so the pain across my back, between my shoulder blades was GONE!

I had a bit of a journey to get to a shop but it was worth it and now I know my size I can order online or by phone so I don't need to trail in again. And when the clip snapped on one of them they immediately sent me another by post with packaging to return the broken one. The others have all been fine so it was just one of those things. They were very good about it and didn't make me feel like it was my fault for trying to hoist these huge things into it! :-)
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • Oh, and if I had to choose between one decent bra and 3 cheapie ones, I'd go for the one good one and wash it out at night by hand. Though if you're lucky with sales etc, you can pick up a good one cheaply.

Bravissimo all the way! MS bras are crap for larger chests! They just scale up their smaller styles, with no thought for differing dynamics etc...

M&S are also notorious for getting bra measurements wrong. A few years ago I went into 3 different M&S stores (London) to get measured - the results were 36A; 38D and 32B.

I went into Bravisimo outta frustration, but was so impressed by their customer service and fitting (I'm a 30G), that I brought 3 bras... I've never looked back! I occasionally buy bras in Debs and HoF, but only every Freya and other makes that Bravissimo stock.

Every now and then, as an extra special treat, I Rigby and Peller it - tres £$£$£ though, unless you hit a sale!

I live in Spain and there are no big bras here, every thing is a b cup. So having got fitted in UK I now shop via the internet, ebay usually, new section. You can get warners, panache, fantasie (my favourite) M and S, gossard, bravissimo bras etc You can also get 'minimiser' bras. You really need to shop around and try on lots of different styles and sizes, 36f in one make might be the equivalent of 38g in another. When tryinf n bras I always wear quite a tight fitting t shirt so I can see what shape I end up with

I'm also well endowed (40E-F) and find bra buying a nightmare. I have very round, full boobs that haven't sagged and one is slightly bigger than the other. I tried some bras from M&S on recently that were in the bigger range but pretty but one boob was overspilling in one cup and I had room for a tissue in the other cup. I also hate their minimiser bras - they just give you a strange shape.

I have been to a local specialist fitter and the bras are okay but not brill. I've also had a rigby and peller bra, again it was okay but not wonderful.

I would second the importance of being properly measured, before you try to buy online. I wore a 36C for years (having been measured as this size on several occasions by M and S). A few years ago I went to Rigby and Peller, who told me I was very small across the back (but big up top!) and was in fact a 32E! The difference in appearance, support and comfort was amazing. I looked several sizes smaller for a start, just because everything was held up correctly. I've been fitted at R and P a few times since then, by different people and the size has stayed the same so I am fairly sure it is correct.

Once you know the size and style they recommend, you could try and source more cheaply on the internet, though different makes fit slightly differently so you always need to try on before you can be sure you've got one that fits.
  • Bravissimo is a store i keep meaning to check out - m&s measured me a 36E but i just dont feel like i have a huge amount of support and im always trying to tighten the straps to hoist them up a bit. Might have to go to Bravissimo after all the recomendations here. Thanks OP for asking the question :)
