Hi, I use dial up ftb until broadband is a bit cheaper!! Is there anything that can be done to speed this up at no extra cost?
Even if not, is firefox generally faster or slower at browsing than IE please?3dom wrote:Stuff I found that greatly improves Firefoxes Speeeeeed

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up:
1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.
2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30.
This means it will make 30 requests at once.
3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.
4. Find network.dns.disableIPv6
Double click to toggle it to true and then restart Firefox.
You should notice a speed increase, page to page.0 -
Madiran wrote:Can anyone tell me how to set up Firefox to cater for two users (two sets of bookmarks etc)? We currently use Netscape where we have two profiles - can we take across both sets of bookmarks then maintain and access them separately?
If you have separate Windows user accounts, Firefox will automatically give you a profile a separate profile for each account.
If you both use the same desktop, you can get more profiles by doing the following:- Make a copy of the Firefox shortcut.
- Rename the copied bookmark 'Profile Manager'
- Right-click the copied bookmark and select properties
- In the Targer field replace "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" with "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
Suppose you create a new profile called user2. You can make a bookmark that will open the user2 by doing the following:- Make a copy of the Firefox shortcut.
- Rename the copied bookmark 'user2'
- Right-click the copied bookmark and select properties
- In the Targer field replace "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" with "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p "user2" (case sensitive)
You can also get the profile manager by typing "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -profilemanager into 'run' but doing the above instead gives you permanant shortcuts.
Note - Your original Firefox bookmark will open the last account you opened with the Profile Manager, so you may want to create a specifically to open your default account0 -

Just updated to Firefox 1.0.4 and it still doesn't work.
Not worked in Firefox versions 1.0.0, 1.0.3 and now 1.04.
Will try it on a different pc, maybe its a problem with my operating system (WinXP).

I'm most probably going to get battered, but I have to admit that I love Internet Explorer. It's always performed fast rendering, and I don't have too many complaints about it.
I've been trialing the new IE 7 beta over the past couple of days (nice MSDN subscription) and have found the tabbed browsing useful - have just got to wait for the full implementation of RSS feeds, etc, and I hope most people will be "loving it".

IE is still a good browser despite its downfalls. If you've got a secure setup you shouldn't encounter any viruses or spyware anyway. At home and at work I've never had a virus or piece of spyware from IE. There is a lot of bad press surrounding it, and people often get caught up in it all.
Personally I switch between Firefox and IE, although as far as developing is concerned I prefer Firefox as it's standard compliant, and has a number of useful extensions for tearing a page apart.
With regards to IE7, it does look quite impress and should be a lot more secure, have tabbed browsing, rss support etc... One thing they haven't seem to have done, from reading around, is fix many of the CSS and other display problems one encounters when developing. So from a developers point of view it won't be hugely different from IE6."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Hi
I have just loaded Firefox, but whenever I click on MSN Messenger it loads up in IE. Can I change this or do I need to open up Firefox and navigate to hotmail each time.
Thanks0 -
I've been using Firefox for about 6 months now, and plan to stick with it. However, I do think that new users should be aware that whereas most web site developers will ensure that their sites are compatible with IE and Nestscape, most developers do not check for compatability with Firefox. Hopefully as more Firfox users come on board, developers will start to take Firefox more seriously.
I use the internet for several hours each day, and I would say that once every couple of days I come across a site where some web function doesn't work, and now I don't spend time wondering why it doesn't work - I just transfer to IE. Most times this is an inconvenience rather than a problem, but when I am making an internet payment, I will usually stick to IE, as having to quit half way and start in another browser isn't appealing. My bank also displays a disclaimer saying that it can't guarantee it's site to work with Mozilla, which again makes me nervous, but it has worked no problem so far.
On the whole it's worth it to try and break the IE stranglehold."Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie

All this praise for FireFox, maybe I'll give it a try.
I only use dial-up, and I've been using Deepnet Explorer for a few months now, and really like it. Have a look at https://www.deepnetexplorer.com.0
