Hiya englishmac!
such a great post, thanks! especially the bit about honest budgeting - so true, and many of us here have a tendency of setting unrealistic goals in our first excitement, and when we fail, we give up....
also, if i have to buy something, bringing just enough money to the store is very sensible, but gosh, THE HARDEST THING TO DO!!!!! I still get all sweaty and nervous if i dont have more on me than needed. Why is this?
got the amount of my debt written in my purse

Hope it helps!

Thanks for this post- I can so relate. I never saw myself in debt... Yes, DH had about £7000 in a car loan, student loan, and old consolidation loan, and yes, somehow my credit card had crept up to £1500... Now, my maternity leave is finishing, I haven't been able to find a new job, we are reliant on DHs income... and I still seem to have the same spending habits. Your post is inspiring- I hope I can bite the bullet too.0

That really made me laugh - you probably didn't mean it but it made me think of those times I've had 'female' emergencies and no change for the machine in the ladies!!! You're right, even my huge credit limits can't help with that! And for the men out there a) sorry and b) no I didn't mean contraception
:rotfl: Oh that's priceless! (well within budget then)

ook we can make this as a tough love club mantra: "there is no emergency that the plastic can help me with" ohh but what if... and if... and if maybe.. and what if......??????????:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o
Now my weekend looks the following: friday, sat and and sunday staying in town in aunt's house = no travel costs (i dont have travelcard anymore, cycling everywhere or pay bus on oyster....). friday dinner - free. sat lunch and din - free. sun lunch - aunt's fridge :rotfl: sun eve party - free. SOUNDS absolutely fab
tomorrow have to buy diet coke tho (£2.66) and i only have £1.24.... means i will go through drawers and pockets tonight. wish me luck!!! why don't we do a "who finds more cash in the house" challenge :j:j
The plastic's a bit insiduous like that, hu? I think I might need like an AA for plastic users- I have gotten rid of all bar one card though, which I need to keep in case work send me away somewhere... not that there's much I can spend on it at the moment
there is no emergency that the plastic can help me with
:rotfl: I'll need to start reciting that every day, I think
Your weekend sounds fab - and very DFW too
I think I've found most of the coins in my house - and stuck them in my Tardis money boxbut I'll take you up on that... hrm... kitchen drawers might have the odd wee thing in them...

englishmac wrote: »Budget honestly. Sounds easy but it isn’t, as most MSEers probably know. There’s no point in budgeting for £30 housekeeping if it isn’t realistic. You will fail immediately and it will just encourage you to give up before you’ve really got going.
Do not carry a credit card or cash if possible - carry your account card. This reduces the amount you have for ‘emergencies’
....
If you have to spend, plan it and carry only the cash you have allowed for the item(s) in question. If that is all you have, then you can’t overspend. Take a calculator with you if necessary.
To keep yourself motivated, plan specific rewards for successful milestones and specific treats for the times when you get disheartened. By doing this you reinforce your resolve to meet your goals by celebrating your success and allowing yourself a bit of indulgence for when you need a little TLC. By pre-determining your rewards/treats you still remain within your budget and have no good reason to feel guilty if you temporarily ease off.
Join your local library. Libraries are something we don’t tend to bother with in these modern times when our lives are so busy. But they are a great cheap way to read/access the internet/hire CDs and DVDs. If you pay for internet access but don’t use it much, it may be cheaper to ditch it and use a library pc. Choice of books, etc may not be as good as when you buy but you can usually find something and why not try a new subject/area such as autobiography instead of novel?
Buy supermarket own brands. .
I've snipped out the bits that really resonated to me - I really like your ideas, definitely and the reward idea is a good one. I must go away and have a think about it.
Thank you!LBM 21/11/07 Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts. Nerd Number 872 DFD ~07/2009 Stats at payday feb08: overdraft ; Gone CC1: £1,519.63 CC2: £402.15
