selling books on Amazon - tips for more profit

Thanks for your input Austin Allegro.
Neither Amazon nor ebay have the book for sale in the UK. I've put it on for quite a bit less than the American ones and shall be interested to see what happens in next week or so when I shall no doubt bring it down to a more reasonable price. There are four books in the series, they are pattern books used for art/sugarcraft etc, and I notice that the other three are being advertised for £15+ and they are from UK sellers. I shall investigate tomorrow to see if they are out of print. I was told I needed them for my C&G course several years ago but never used them after all!
Really interesting though isn't it?
I've also just sold another two text books tonight! Yaaahaayyyy I hope this continues as my house will then be clear of books bought but never used for revision by my son! Typical boy - perhaps if he had used them his results would have been better:rolleyes: .
Edit update: Buyer cancelled one book as ordered wrong one. Will I still incur charges as it is her mistake??????0 -
Still a learner at all this, so please be gentle!!
This is a great thread, and I have finally taken the plunge tonight and listed a load of books with Amazon... I do have one question which having read all previous comments, I haven't noticed this being mentioned before.
If you use the ISBN number of your book to list it, if a newer edition has been printed, this newer edition will have a different ISBN number... (this seems to be the case anyway, from looking through entries in the Amazon site). How will anyone (potential buyer) find the older editions - unless they know the old ISBN number (which they won't always...) If you use the book title, Amazon brings up only the current edition.
Do you therefore list under the newer edition, but comment that it is an older edition, different jacket etc. I think you have more chance of your entry being seen, but could you be accused of possible misleading and therefore get bad feedback?? I had noticed with one of my textbooks that someone had listed it under the newer edition, but marked that it was an older one. It seems to have been sold at a very good price... when I look at the same book under the old ISBN number, there are an awful lot of entries at not such good prices.
Or am I just looking into this too much?!? Or missing something completely?

Since posting just a few minutes ago, checked my emails and found that I have sold a book already. So obviously I am missing something, as I can't see how anyone could find this book under the old edition - or is this something to do with wish lists that I have seen mentioned?
Anyway, couple of £s profit - depending what postage I use... now I wish I had priced it higher, on the off chance I may have made more!!!

Hi PP
You need to go into your seller account page and then look for billing /transaction history. From there you can find the transaction ID and issue a refund from that. It's just a case of writing a few words in the box and clicking, the buyer gets an email explaining that he has a refund0 -
Thanks Hun...all done.

Wow, I have just listed a whole load of technical computing books. I get them as review copies, the publisher never wants them back, and the colleges are really picky about what they will take, and want me to deliver them. So, here goes. Don't know what the market will be like for these kinds of books, but I think it's great that it doesn't cost me anything if they don't sell. I have got that right haven't I?
Thanks to this site, it really is sorting out our finances, and clearing our house!0 -

Hi Bella,
When a buyer looks for a book the first ones they will see are the most popular versions of the title - the large print, older editions and audio variations are lower down the page where the buyer might not look.
The example of the listing you saw is a little unfair on the buyer because although the seller has stated that it is an older edition put in amongst the newer ones if the buyer wanted an older edition they could get it cheaper if they looked further down the page at the other listings.0 -

Yes bj it's FREE until you sell so you can test the prices etc at no risk of losing money0 -
Penny Pincher, I've only ever had to give one refund (Royal Mail lost the book:roll: ) but IIRC there's no place to put an explanation? If there isn't it would be a good idea to email the buyer explaining the mistake and apologising (if you haven't already) otherwise they could be tempted to give you negative feedback for wasting their time. Cancelling the transaction does not seem to stop people being allowed to give you feedback as I found to my great irritation (I got a 1-star from someone whose card had been declined- Amazon agreed that I shouldn't have posted the book but still refused to remove the feedback; their customer service is absolutely atrocious in my experience).0
