I only read this thread last week and thought I'd have a go at selling on Amazon. Two books I only put on Saturday were both sold by yesterday evening. So thanks very much to every one for their helpful comments especially apprentice tycoon!

One of the books I was going to list cost me £4.95. I looked to see the competitive price on Amazon and there are two for sale, both in the US but wll ship to the UK. Their prices are £45+ .

It is the same book, the same ISBN number.............................! I don't know what to do. I don't feel I could list it at that price as I would feel I am cheating someone. Has anyone else come across the same sort of senario please? Would welcome your views.
  • I wish I knew how these strange prices come about, there seems to be no logic to it at all.
There is nothing to stop you listing at a higher price and reduce it down later if nothing happens and you get fed up with waiting for it to sell. I would put in the listing that you are a UK seller, that will help.
  • Thanks for your great post. I read a lot and always have books lying around. Usually save this up and sell them at the Car Boot but Im going to give Amazon a shot tonight.

Do you know if Computer Books sell well?? My hub is computer nerd and I want to get rid of them??
  • I'm afraid that I've no idea about computer books, the only real way to find out is to actually list them and see what amount everyone else is asking for the same books and then decide if it's worth your bother, it's free to try!

Thanks for your help. I think I'll put it at a slightly higher price and be ready to post to USA instead of just UK.............................time to test Amazon I suppose! :D

There's often no logic to the prices on Amazon (or ABE books, the other main site). If the book cost you £4.95, I can see no reason why they should be selling it for £45 unless it is 'collectable' - ie is a signed copy or something.

It might be that the book is out of print and in high demand.

If it is the latter, you should start by undercutting the other sellers by about 5 or 10 per cent, then if you get no takers after a few weeks, you could gradually drop the price.

However, a lot of the time I think booksellers just think of a random high price and hope for the best .EG a Dr Who book I had was advertised on ABE books for £95, but nobody was buying it. I advertised it at about £60 - no takers - then about £40 - no takers - then dropped to £18 when it finally sold.

Yes, you will some incredibly high prices for books, especially on a few notorious USA sellers. One is RBM books. Seems what the do is list somebooks that they don't necessarily have to sell - then if they get a response they try to source the book in a hurry from somewhere else - the huge price is in essence a kind of search fee that they pocket if they get lucky - but the buyer doesn't know it - on occasions they will fail and they get negative feedbacks for failing to supply the book or it not being quite the same as described.
