Hi i hope someone here can help me coz im completely baffled by this basically i have a laptop my mum has a laptop and we have a main computer
on saturday my mum downloaded a game and the laptop closed all the screens and the internet stopped working its not worked ever since my laptop and main computer is still working the laptops come off a linkys router and that comes off the modem now i thought that if my laptop is still working and the main computer is still working it cant be the router or modem (ive rang linkys and virgin media)
Ive turned off the firewall to see if that was blocking the connection. it says the laptop is connected to the internet it has
computer-router-x-internet
so the computer is connected to the router and the router is somehow stopping the laptop from connecting to the internet?
has anyone got any idea how i can fix this??? any ideas please please please this is really getting on my nut i havent had a relaxing weekend because of this and my mum thinks im some genius that can fix this!!!!!
HELP PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE
many thanks

Sounds like you've downloaded some malware. First, disconnect the computer from the internet (by unplugging the cable, turning off the Wifi adapter, etc.) and then scan for and remove the dodgy software using Spybot.
You will then need to secure your system to avoid problems like this in future. Use the "Immunize" feature of Spybot, download SpywareBlaster, and use a good antivirus (AVG and AntiVir have excellent free antivirus programs).
Oh, and avoid using Internet Explorer - Firefox is much safer (particularly with the NoScript add-on) as it doesn't use ActiveX.
If you're not familiar with any of the software/terms I have mentioned a quick look at a search engine should point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps...0 -
thankyou

My mums laptop doesnt have spybot on is it ok to use AVG that was already on it before all this happened. ive started running avg to see if it finds anything but it hasn't so far, what do i do if it doesnt find anything? Im not really that good with computers (as you have probably guessed lol)
If i downloaded spybot onto my laptop how could i get it on my mums because the internet isnt working on hers and i dont have a usb stick

Go through the malware removal guide sticky step by step. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269
As for transferring the programs do you have anything you could transfer it on, CD Writer, DVD writer, external hard drive etc? If not how on Earth do you manage to back up your important documents?"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Do you know how to burn stuff to a disc?
You may also want to try http://www.superantispyware.com/
Big blue button in ther middle of the screen0 -
It might actually be worth trying to do a system restore back to the time before the game was downloaded and see if that works. If it doesn't then no harm done and continue following the instructions on the Malware removal guide.
How to do a system restore in XP: Here0 -

If there's nothing you can't afford to lose then I don't suppose it matters. For me it's about important stuff and also convenient stuff. I.e. nothing too important about losing but it'd be nice not to or to have to recreate etc. What about your email?
If you have a CD writer then get all the programs you'll think you'll need from all the suggestions and put them all on one CD. Better than continuously going back and forth."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Ive downloaded the superanti spyware if i put it on a cd and put it in my mums laptop scan and if it doesnt find anything how would i do a full wipe out? theres nothing that important on there apart from a few websites but i can write them down. Ive disconnected the WLAN on the front of the laptop and running avg at the moment its still not found anything. My Brother in law is supposed to be a IT technichian and even he cant fix it (brain like a sieve i think)

Follow danmanchester's link above and do a system restore. If you really want to be completely drastic and reinstall windows then that'll depend on whether you have the windows/recovery cd for the laptop."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
