Tinkerbell84 - I tried Atkins but it made me feel quite ill so I'm not sure about trying to go down that route again.

I've never done Atkins. I'm doing the Idiot-Proof Diet - it's less extreme than Atkins. The caffeine withdrawal did make me feel lousy for 1 day, but 4 weeks in, 12lbs lost and I'm feeling fabulous. I'm eating more veg than ever before, drinking 3 litres of water a day, my skin looks amazing and I'm feeling fitter than ever (with just a 15 minute brisk walk every day and a few gentle weights for upper body toning).

There's an online forum too which is fabulous. PM me if you want to know more.
  • Well I have read a bit more of the book mentioned above and I have discovered quite a bit. I used to think it was calories that made a difference but when you see what eating sugar, baked goods and other refined foods does to your blood chemistry it becomes easier not to want them!
  • Anyone wanting to lose weight and keep it off needs to understand the mechanics of fat metabolism and the role of insulin.

The hour plus needed to listen to Gary Taubes Berkley lecture is a worthwhile investment.

I've also now read his book
The Diet Delusion: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Loss and Disease
and thoroughly recommend it. However do be aware this isn't a diet book, it is a science based discussion detailing the history of Obesity research and the failure of health authorities to apply common sense.

After considering what he has to say and reading various interviews/articles online I decided to cut out refined carbs and have so far lost 10lbs in the last two weeks without feeling hungry. I'm not following any diet plan or spending any money on special foods. I simply select from
the list of foods you may eat here

    My daily diet is basically
    2cups green tea
    Breakfast
Stewed unsweetened apples. (filled the freezer last year) + heaped tablespoon ground linseed & mixed nuts (change = no oats or other cereal)

Green tea + item of fruit

    Midday
Vegetable soup cold meats/cheese (Change = no bread, cake)

    Green tea + fruit

    Evening.
Meat portion, 2-3 veggies cauli, carrot, Brussels greens (change= no potato or sweet potato or other starchy veg)

Green tea (change= no wine / beer)

If I get peckish in between I'll eat some nuts (Julian Graves atm brazil nuts buy one get one free) olives, fruit such as orange apple pear not grapes/bananas but I've not felt hungry since giving up carbs and not even missing my regular red wine.

I'm not in a position to be about to increase my exercise so I don't put my weight loss down to any increased exercise.
Does Exercise Really Make Us Thinner? -- New York Magazine -

I should perhaps mention I drink green tea mainly because I prefer it's taste.

I've drunk it for several years now (it may take a week or two to acquire a taste for it) but a search of pubmed using the search words green tea + photoaging photoprotection anti microbial will provide hours of interesting reading.

It is diets like that that make people fail! For me it would be unappetising and I would be permanently hungry but since it was recommended by a health professional I have no doubt that it contains the nutrients you need to keep body and soul together. Not sure many would stick to it without the incentive of needing to lose weigth for surgery.

Before he died I watched a programme where Dr Atkins was debating his diet with another doctor who thought it was bad and Dr Atkins said something which amazed me but should have been obvious. He said that the people that come to him do not have 10lbs or less to lose they often have 200 or more lbs to lose plus they have issues with heart problems (he was a cardiologist). Those people are not choosing between a lean chicken breast or a piece of fish with salad or green veg. they are eating massive amounts of unhealthy food, drinking cola and not taking exercise. Those people will never, ever stick to a diet like Ethelblogs mentions and countless doctors and health experts recommend. However they will try a diet that just asks them to cut out flour and sugar as long as they can fill up on a whole chicken if they want to. Once you get them losing the weight without feeling hungry all the time, you can then begin to educate them about healthy portions and low glycmic carbs.

Horrid aren't they MrsB.. thankfully I only have to do it for 3 weeks but just thought that if DawnyLou wanted a kickstart she might want to try one of those. Apparently with the milk one you don't feel hungry at all.

This is what I have found. Although I'm not doing a strict Atkins. I was previously craving for food before mealtimes and felt I NEEDED to drink rather than wanted to. Simply cutting out the carbs has ended the craving and switched off the need for a drink.

Previously when faced with a Free buffet my plan was to get a full plateful and be back for seconds as soon as the queue had gone and if there was a bar I was the first to be buying. Yesterday I went to a posh do with loads of really superb food and although it was absolutely scrumptious I was able to select my NO CARB options and didn't feel the need (although it did seem a waste of a golden opportunity) to go round for seconds or even use the bar.

I really can't tell you how much difference eating the low carb way has made to my enjoyment of food.
You may feel eating only from the following list somewhat limiting but I'm not feeling at all deprived and certainly not even a little bit hungry.
Dairy products. Milk, yoghurt, cheese, Feta cheese, cottage cheese, Creme Fraiche, cream cheese, butter, mayonnaise etc.
Do not choose low fat products or sugar-added products.
Beef, pork, lamb, chicken fish, shellfish. Don't remove the fat.
Ham, sausage and other processed meats (make sure the carbohydrate content doesn't exceed 5g per 100g)
Eggs (choose organic - ordinary eggs have too much omega-6)
Herbs, spices, stock, salt and pepper according to taste.
    Sauces with low carbohydrate content.
    Vegetables. Olives. Linseed
Dressings with oil and vinegar or mayonnaise.
Cold pressed oils. Olive-, rapeseed-, linseed-, coconut- and palmoil (just remember the body cannot use the omega-3 from vegetable oils)

More details of Doktor Dalhquist's eating plan here.

I'm now using Coconut Oil (£1 for 500ml from Indian grocers) for cooking as that also helps weight loss .

Interesting to see the beneficial effects on brain health of low carb eating.

  • Coconut Oil is amazing stuff.
I have a very low carb diet and never felt better but I'm a coeliac which cuts out a lot of things.
Also giving up things with sweetners (aspartame) shed a good few pounds for me.
Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.
