Thanks for that post. I have been looking for a decent deal and I think you founf it. Just ordered one, although I took the 17" value flat monitor and upgraded the graphics card - £4450

Can someone please kind enough to pm me the 5% discount for dell?
Thanks.

D09516: that is indeed a very good deal. I just spent some time going through the e-value codes and you can get a lower specced machine for a higher price! Very good find.No reliance should be placed on the above.0

Information for a computer thickie, please: do I need a sound card with that setup, as it says "not included" on the list?
I think this would be a good buy for my boy who is off to Uni, but want to make sure I get it right!

Some PCs come with specialist cards for sound. IF they dont, then they will use an integrated chip for audio.
The Dell PC will still have perfectly acceptible sound, even if it states "not included"Be nice0 -

There is onboard sound.... they won't give you speakers with no sound. You could easily add a sound card later if you wanted surround sound etc.
This is a VERY good deal. I thought I'd got my 5100 cheap a few weeks ago at £214 for the base unit.... but this has (extra over the spec of my machine) 512Mb ram, 130Mb HD, better graphics, speakers, DVD writer, Internal 9-in-1 Flash Card Reader and 17" TFT for only £193 more. I reckon the extras to add myself would cost at least £300. If I was ordering one now I'd be tempted to go for the Ultrasharp 19" screen - which retails on it's own for over £300 - so for £523 all in it's a steal.0 -
Could someone PM me the 5% voucher please ?Nice to save.0

Thank you both for that info! One more thing - do you think there would be any real advantage in having XP pro rather than XP Home, or is that fine? I think I will stick with the 17'' monitor, although I do appreciate your point about the excellent value of the 19'' Ultrasharp, as want to keep the cost down (boy is paying half!). Thanks again for advice [0

That link states the differences between the XP versions.
However, to cut a long story short, you only need XP Home.
Professional is designed for businesses etc, and will clog you down with things that aren't required as a home user.Be nice0 -
I use my 5100 PC for business and it's fine on XP Home. I had the same dilemma - I think XP Pro is better if you want to do networking.
By the way - you may buy the Dell 5100 and not realise what a quiet machine it is.... In haste I bought a non-Dell desktop when my old Dell laptop died and it was very noisey. I put this down to desktops being noisier than laptops but it drove me mad. I eventually sent it back due to another fault - and am now so glad to have the Dell 5100.... it's hard to tell it's switched on.0
