  • Hope this helps a lot of you out there.Having been informed by Swalec that our Easywarm payment was to rise from £71 to £106 per month I contacted The Energy Helpline(0800 008 63 99 quoting "JOO62") ;who sorted out a deal with Scottish Power @£71 per month FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS if we want to stay with them! Good luck to Martin and all of you.

Do you mean by this that Scottish Power now have an unmetered tariff similar to Staywarm & Easywarm, or that £71/month was the direct debit amount they offered you (even if this means running up a debit balance), or that £71/month would be the actual consumption charge fixed for 4 years provided your consumption level stays the same ? Also what is your actual annual consumption ?

Just food for thought, we have been told by Powergen that our new tariff for 2007 will be £94.07 a month, compared with last year £68.69
This is because we have breached the magic 4800 kwh usage on electricity, by 22.62 units!
If we want to switch there is really not that much else out there to compare. Scottish Power gives a three year deal, and we don't want the sort of commitment. If we go back to the normal tariff, prices can go either way, but usually head North for winter.
So it looks like we will stay, for this year atleast

    Hi Oldman,

The consumption figures are not fixed at 4800, they vary depending on the number of bedrooms and people in your home.

I have just had my new increase from Staywarm

For the last year I have paid £47.43 per month covering Gas and Electric.

Tye've informed me I have used

    Gas.......................16328 kilowatt hours of gas

    Electric..................3811

My increase would be to £64.14

I've tried two comparison sites and Staywarm are still the lowest for me based on giving them the above kilowatt details, but they're showing me savings ans I can't understand how.

I work that out to £770 per year and the lowets figures they show are £818 and telling me I'd be saving.

I can't understand this and am hoping someone with greater experience might help me out please.
    Thanks.

Hi Needmoney, essentially the comparison sites provide you with a quote based on exactly how much you've used. It looks as though, despite the increase, StayWarm is the best product for you.

Don't forget that there have been huge increases within the entire industry lately and all power companies have taken a fair hit on it.
  • A point to bear in mind for older people on the Staywarm tariff:

If you're taking advantage of the WarmFront scheme and getting a new boiler/updated heating system, Staywarm may NOT be the cheapest for you.

At present we're paying £56 for gas, £28.50 for electricity, total £84.50 a month by direct debit from Npower.

2 days ago Staywarm gave me a quote of £82.40 a month fixed for one year. However, we're having a new boiler fitted probably early in the New Year, and these boilers are estimated to save 1/3rd of gas costs. Therefore, our £56 a month may tumble to £37 a month, which the Staywarm tariff - if we were on that - wouldn't take account of.

So anyone who's having a new boiler fitted under WarmFront should have a look to see whether Staywarm is really cost-effective for them.

Uswitch includes a comparison with Staywarm.
    I don't think you'll find it does.

It does allow you to put in Staywarm as your existing tariff (which most sites don't do), as long as you tell it your monthly DD, but I doubt that it's even possible to include it as a switching option as Staywarm's methods of setting their prices are not now published.

    Hi All
Last year about this time I left info on this site about changing from Staywarm (Powergen) to British Gas. Living in a 3 bedroomed house with just my Wife and myself, we were being charged £84 55p per month (£1014 per annum ) for electricity which is our only fuel. I felt that this was excessive and asked for a quote from B. Gas who quoted £50.00 per month. (£600 per annum ) based on the previous years Economy 7 usage. I pay by Direct debit and have just received my bill for the full 12 months, and it is under £600.
Powergen are doing no one any favours (except themselves) by allowing the customer to use as much power as they want as if you become a high user you are reasessed or basically sacked, their actions are further compounded by the fact that in the 3 years I was with them I never received any indication of my usage, and being basically lazy, never bothered to read the meter for myself and working out the true cost.
I'm fairly certain that a single person in one bedroom accomodation gets the better deal than someone with 2 or3 bedrooms as of course the more rooms you have the more you pay, even if you don't heat the bedrooms.
I make no bones about the fact that I'm a Yorkshire lad with some Scottish antecedence but despite being Careful, our room temperature never drops below the levels required for a 70 year old wrinkley.
I'm sure that many people feel comfortable with the fact that they know exactly how much their fuel bills are going to be,but are they getting value for money or are they being ripped off. Martin has helped me in many ways to change my finances to great advantage. I hope this snippet will go some way to helping others achieve financial benefits

    Hi squirt

See my post #156 above. I had a quote from Staywarm in December for £82.40 a month, 2 people living in a 2-bed bungalow in south-east Essex. I didn't take it up. We've recently had a price reduction for electricity and we're waiting to see what the change in gas usage is going to be following our new combi condensing gas boiler installed a month ago. At present we're paying a total of £81 a month for both, but this is likely to fall because the new gas boilers are said to use 1/3rd less gas.

    Hi squirt
I think you should go onto one of the comparison sites and fill in you previous years usage if that is possible. this is the only way you can get an accurate asessment using current prices. Once you have done this then contact staywarm and ask them to quote you for the number of people / rooms in your home. the info they give you can then be compared to the other company. If the difference is not too great then it may be worth using staywarm just to be sure that within reason you can use as much power as is necessary to keep adequate temperatures in your home, but be careful.
    Good Luck
