  • You're the one that said free range eggs were a lot more....Anyway....

    All standard prices..

    Tesco Medium Barn Eggs (12) = £2.19
Tesco Medium Free Range Eggs (12) = £2.45
this is 2.1p per egg more....

    Sainsbury's Large Barn Eggs (6) = £1.24
    Sainsbury's Large Woodland Free Range Eggs (6) = £1.45
this is 3.5p per egg more....

    ASDA Medium Barn Eggs (6) = £1.18
ASDA British Free Range Medium Eggs (6) = £1.19
this is 0.1p per egg more

to me that's a small fraction....1p more for free range.

Just buy less takaways and drink less booze...you'll easily afford the penny more then!!! As well as the extra couple of quid for a decent chicken...

I am on a low income (although I don't seem to tick all the boxes for this, no car, no lcd/plasma TV, don't smoke) but that isn't the only reason I buy 2 for £6 chickens, I do not feel then need to spend extra when we like the taste of these chickens and no I do not disguise the flavour, we have roast chicken and it is lovely thanks and I also make other meals out of the chicken.

We only eat meat 2-3 times per week and I do not buy the value type meat as I have tried it and didn't like it, similarly I do not buy the organic/free range meat as I have tried it and didn't notice a difference in taste so felt it wasn't worth paying extra for. I also buy battery eggs.

Am I a bad person for knowing where my food comes from and still eating it? I have made the decision to buy the food I do after researching different methods of food production and have tried different levels of food (value,mid-range etc) and finding the types that suit us best. I believe this is what everyone should do find and buy the food that suits them and their families best.

I am not a bad mother for feeding my child these chickens, I cook from scratch which is more expensive than buying ready meals.

I think you should be applauded for cooking all your meals from scratch!

    I do too :) & bread /biscuits/ cakes/crackers ...you name it I'll cook it

I've always found it much cheaper this way ...mind you I've picked up so many tips from the OS board that have helped me .

It;s well worth popping over to the OS board when you get a min. :)

But I didn't make the comparison between free range and barn eggs, those are not the only types available. Also supermarkets aren't the only places to buy eggs.

Where have I mentioned that I use the money saved for takeaways and booze?

Personally I am happy with the food I buy and the prices I pay for them and do not need advice from anyone else thanks, least of all from someone like yourself.

Thanks I do frequent OS and have found many tips/suggstions from there.

I mentioned later on that I was referring to the 6 for £4 type ready meals as I am sure they work out cheaper. Although I use different ingredients so that might be why they are more expensive.
  • Right back to the subject.

Over the last 4 or 5 years, I've slowly been making the transition to Organic & free range.

The first thing was the eggs
next it was meat & chicken
    next was milk
finally fruit & veg & flour.

It has been hard but well worth it and my shopping bill now is less than it was 4 years ago. So I can now afford to go free range & sometimes organic on the eggs and Chicken.

    My last chickeen did.

    1 Sunday roast .
2 days of chick/ celery/carrot (the veg in a very very fine dice) & mayo sarnies for the girls' lunch boxes.
    1 chicken pie
1 chicken stock which was used for a soup.( served with hm bread)

also 2 x dinner for the cat .

    so that's 3 x main meals
    2 x lunches
2 dinners for the cat .

So quite a few meals from a £6 -£8 chicken .( depending if you buy organic or F/R)

Plus I saved 2 packs of cat food .

  • I am not giving people advice ...especially blinkered people that have already made their mind up.

I am merely suggesting that it is not that much more to buy free range eggs and organic chickens (that have not lived 16 to a 1m space, eaten each others faeces continously, had their feet virtually pecked off, lived for less than 30 days like this, etc etc)

I just find it disappointing that there obviously good people around that have a conscience, and other "selfish types" who are a little less selfless and out for what they can get. And "Yes" you can have a conscience about about how animals are treated and be a meat eater (it's how its treated while its alive surely!!)

Don't worry about it, I think it's shocking that they can sell 'meals' for this price and am saddened when I see families stocking up on these but I suppose that is there personal choice and they have a right to it but I don't think they can be very nutritional for their children who don't have a real choice.

Can I ask why you made the choice to go free range?
Just wondering if it is because of the taste as I personally have tried it and didn't see a noticeable difference in the taste.

    You could have fooled me.;)

If you are not giving advice, exactly what is your point of posting in a thread that is dedicated to Tesco Cheap Chickens?

Along with many others, it seems that preaching morals to others is the order of the day.

Well I will buy and eat what I choose, I don't need any preacher spouting their own morals at me.

Oh and no I don't have a Giro each week/month either.
