.... I cook from scratch which is more expensive than buying ready meals.
Unless you are making some pretty exotic meals, then you are doing it wrong - your standard meals (Spag bol, cottage pie, hot pot, pizza etc.) should be cheaper for you to make. Unless you are actually buying the dextrose, monosodium glutamate, preservatives, colours etc. to make them taste like 'genuine' shop bought!
All the World is a Stage; and I'm going through a difficult one at the moment!0 -

I definitely agree, once you have your kitchen cupboard stocked with the basics, flour, herbs, spices etc etc. Cooking from scratch, is way cheaper, than filling the freezer with ready meals. I was going to say healthier as well, but that'll twist the debate even further away from the original post.:pQuotes in context only please.0 -

Obviously not every meal cooked from scratch is more expensive than ready meals, I was thinking of the 6 for £4 type ready meals. I am sure they work out cheaper although I doubt they contain anywhere near the ingredients I would use.0 -
I am really taken aback at the amount of ready meals in a supermarket!!
We don't have kids or pets so miss those aisles out
buy washing powder in bulk and althought I get seduced by the adverts at times don't often buy cleaning products!!
(also buy booze for the year durimg our holiday!)
So generally we only do 33% of the supermarket
We have a weekly menu of chicken., pasta/bolognese, reduced to clear, fresh fish, reduced to clear, fresh fish. chops /steak/roast.. I'm no great cook, but come on folks, have a word with yourselves!!.. why pay for somebody else to mix potentially bad things in with real meat & veg??? Our reduced to clear has given us Wild boar , lamb chops (x 60) fillet steak, tuna steak, duck, and many many more things that you don't just !!!!! & ping..
I thought I was still relatively young I am feeling more Old Style as a money saver than ever before.
I totally agree with previous posts about if money is tight you can't afford ethics... we used to buy 'economy' mince... think it may have been' pet' mince, but we enjoyed it then!! Buy (better?) mince now, but who knows what they really sell me?
Rick Stein may rattle on about his 'food heroes' but the best heroes are those who feed their family well. what ever their 'ethics'.0 -
I guess it is a case of individual conscience isn't it
But to say you cannot see the sourcing is nonsense - you can - if you selectively buy - if you just buy per se at large retail supermarkets you are likely to be buying from poor sources with a number of products
Buying meat and veg at say Riverford means you can see the sources - in fact we took the kids to their main farm on holidays
I appreciate the tough call people on low incomes face - i think though that to make small adjustments bit by bit is the way to grow in life anyway so just try one thing new every so often
I know it feels really satisfying buying from Riverford after going there and seeing the organic methods they use - as good a feeling as getting a bargain imho0 -
I have never been a great one for having a conscienceon where my food comes from although I have always bought free range eggs. I saw the Jamie Oliver programme and to be honest I had no idea chickens were kept like that. My family is on a tight income and I now buy the Wye valley chicken in morrisons as often as I can afford it (caught them out last week as their POS said £2.39 p/kg but was marked as just £2.39 on the chicken nothing about the weight so got it for £2.39 - Bargain!)Loves Cornwall - Hates plastic0

In the day that a creature decides that humans are good to eat and puts us all in a cage and makes us have kids in big scale so that they can eat cheaper, you'll change your opinion. If it was with humans, your opinion would be much different. That's what I call being selfish.Goal: Win a car (or cash to buy one
)! -- Haha goal from when I was a student. Never actually won this but got a good job instead.
What I achieved:
Car paid in full straightaway.
Two properties fully paid. Wohhoooo!0
