I noted the comments of the farmer on the program that he certainly preferred the farming of free range production.
If free range became more popular then farmers would move more resource into that area and less into producing cheap chickens
3p per chicken is no way to support our UK farmers anyhow0 -
Ethics and Morals are fine if you can afford them, but if you are a hard pressed parent wanting to fed a family on a low income, then £1.99 is more important to them than the fact for a month the Chicken lived in a hut.
The reality of life is that people like Jamie Oliver have the time and money to lecture the rest of us, he does not have 3 kids and a council flat. Do you remember the TV programme that Michael Portillo did?, even he admitted this was a tough job.
Yes in an ideal world Animal husbandry should be better, but what we call horrible here pales to what is done to Chickens, Dogs, Horses, and other furry things in the rest of Europe and Asia.
Life is tough and fancy ideas of Happy chickens, in fields before they have their throats slit does not really make the world a better place.
The only way forward is to lobby Parliament and Supermarkets to stop ripping off both the farmers and the public in general. The cost of raising an Organic Chicken / Sheep / Cow whatever is very little of the price, the rest is just pure profit for the supermarkets.
But lets remember that 30 years ago, when it was all independent corner shops charging through the nose for a pound of bacon (sorry .5kg ) where did we all rush to shop.....the new supermarket. So we are all to blame. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0 -
I am on a low income (although I don't seem to tick all the boxes for this, no car, no lcd/plasma TV, don't smoke) but that isn't the only reason I buy 2 for £6 chickens, I do not feel then need to spend extra when we like the taste of these chickens and no I do not disguise the flavour, we have roast chicken and it is lovely thanks and I also make other meals out of the chicken.
We only eat meat 2-3 times per week and I do not buy the value type meat as I have tried it and didn't like it, similarly I do not buy the organic/free range meat as I have tried it and didn't notice a difference in taste so felt it wasn't worth paying extra for. I also buy battery eggs.
Am I a bad person for knowing where my food comes from and still eating it? I have made the decision to buy the food I do after researching different methods of food production and have tried different levels of food (value,mid-range etc) and finding the types that suit us best. I believe this is what everyone should do find and buy the food that suits them and their families best.
I am not a bad mother for feeding my child these chickens, I cook from scratch which is more expensive than buying ready meals.0 -

No, course you're not.Quotes in context only please.0 -
Tesco have fresh British chickens on sale at the moment for £1.99.
This thread should not merit 7 pages of opinions on animal welfare ethics.
It's an offer. Take it, or leave it......Please.0 -
