Last week the old (French) ladies in my village taught me the 4, 3, 2, 1 rule for pancake batter - that sounded simple:

    4 cups of milk
    3 eggs
    2 cups of flour
    1 pinch of s

Whisk until smooth, rest for 30 mins.

(Personally I would also add a little vegetable oil in the batter, which saves having to grease the pan each time.)

is there a fool proff pancake recipe ? Searched and couldnt find one. Im designated cook of our family and we are going to mums house! I will be well under scrutiny

I use this one from Delia - it's been pretty foolproof for me :D In fact, I got caught behind a nasty accident after work, so I rang the children and they made the batter, and I cooked it for them - clean plates allround :j

I've decided to make American ones tonight.

I have black cherries and ice cream to go on top. :D

I did ask them this same question, but they laughed at me (OK, I say 'cup', but their very word in French was 'un verre'). They said that it didn't matter really, whatever size cup or glass you used with this system!

Well I put it to the test this evening and used a tin mug of unknown volume, and the pancakes were just fine. So cheers for the 4-3-2-1 rule, I'll remember that from now on......

  • Well, I'm most disappointed. Our local Tesco doesn't sell cherry pie filling any longer, which was our favourite pancake filling.

However, it did mean that we discovered lemon curd on pancakes, which was lovely.

    We had four each. Pigs!

That's a really good recipe thanks :D Made my brood loads tonight, but still not enough for me :o

Thats a shame, I ordered that filling online at Tescos at the weekend, just in time for tonight!

How I love the OS board. I thought I'd like some pancakes today, but I haven't been well, and I already have my groceries being delivered tomorrow so didn't want to spend anything today.
Well I had an egg (stamped use by feb5th), and found the thread on here about testing for freshness.
Watered down the milk to stretch and voila! Lovely tasty pancakes.
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T

Thriftlady this confused me until very recently! An american cup is the same as 8oz (or 226g) . Absolutely great if you find something equivalent to a "cup" measurement, then all those american online recipes are now accessible!

I have Rosemary conley measuring cups , and one is equivalent to an american cup. Yay, i know something! Woo hoooo!
A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men
