If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

my OH is Dutch - and they take their pancakes seriously.. I'm not even allowed to do pancakes in the house - this is HIS job (rather like the BBQ is his job) - and since i do the cooking the rest of the time, i'm really not complaining :D

when he does them we do a mix of sweet and savory "]pancakes, as an entire meal, rather than just as a pudding. grated cheese with onion, ham, bacon bits, mushrooms peppers.. quite often, while he gets on with the pancakes, i'm there with him, chopping up stuff madly. The dutch have a sort of thick syrup that goes on pancakes which i'm not too fond of.. called der originale stroop.. he loves to pour that over.

The other thing that's common in the Netherlands is poffertjes .. these are like mini pancakes, only the mix has yeast in it (like blinis, but made with white flour), so that when it hits the heat, it puffs up. to encourage this the dutch cook them in pans with small 3 cm wide indentations in, flip them with a fork, then serve about 6 or so on a plate with a dusting of icing sugar. very, very yum, very very moreish!! they're sometimes available in european markets in the run up to christmas.

• mrbadexample, I cannot believe that you are a beginner - what a result. Can we see your savoury ones next, please.
• Hi

We have just had our pancakes for pudding. As my name implies I make them quite often. When my son's friends stop over that is what they want for breakfast. Tonight we had plain crepes with orange and a little sugar.

Ahh...well...I think a year ago you could have called me a beginner. Actually, since I hadn't even started, I wasn't a beginner - I was a wannabe! :D

I've learned a bit from OS. :T :rotfl:

And savoury ones...sorry, you'll have to wait for next year now! :p
