I think Earwig means she knows that pancake day is Shrove Tuesday, but not which date it falls on this year. It's a moveable feast ;)

It;s always the day before the start of Lent (which starts on Ash Wednesday), as the intention behind it is to confess sins (shirve - shorve) & use up the sugar in the house before Lent when you will, in theory, give it up for 40 days!;) Lent always starts 47 days before Easter sunday as it lasts 40 days (to represent the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert fasting prior to crucifixation) but today schurch gives us sundays off to indulge in what we have given up for the rest of the week. Hope that makes sense? I know what I mean!

There used to be a very old Cornish custom connected to it called Nilly Nan day or something similar but I can't remember what & can't find anything out about it? Can anyone enlighten me?;)

I found this, on this very interesting site. I'm not sure if the Cornish custom mentioned is the one you're thinking of Lillibet ?

Maple Syrup! I found some real Canadian organic stuff in a little deli in Newent (we don't have deli's in Gloucester) and I eke it out slowly :D

:rotfl: :rotfl: Yummy I love the sound of that!:rotfl: :rotfl: a moveable feast aka a picnic!!!
I know what a moveable feast is.. A special occasion that changes each year, like Easter but when I read "Moveable Feast" I had a chuckle as I imagined a delicious "FEAST" of food. :p

I like my pancakes to be the thick ones, not like thin crepes, does anyone have any good reliable recipies? :D

    Thanks

Do you mean like scottish pancakes? If so, it's

    4oz S.R. flour,
    1oz sugar,
    1 egg
    and about 1/4 pint milk

(serves about 2 (1 if you can eat as many as most people I know) people so increase as needed)

whisk to dropping consistency (if too runny just throw more flour in and whisk again)
drop serving sized spoonfuls onto griddle or frying pan, when bubbles start to pop, turn.

spread with butter, jam, honey, etc.

also really nice with buckwheat flour, just use 1tsp baking powder per 8oz flour.

my son's having a sleepover and this is what they want for breakfast :D
