Sorry if I bring you all down but...
I've not had a good day today I was all happy and positive and then my boss told me they had been looking at me internet use at work and it was high and i now have to have a disaplinary with HR. I am terrified and want to cry. I know it's my own fault for using the net at work, but I don't know what I am going to to.
I can't afford to be out of work and this is stressing me out so much!! I hoping that I will be offered the other job tomorrow. But what happens if not?
I feel like I am taking 2 steps forward and 4 back!!!
Unless you've been looking at something illegal or profoundly against your company's ethos (spelt P-O-R-N), they're not going to sack you for a first off offence.
It also depends on what sorts of guidance (if any!) they've submitted in terms of internet use - some companies have issued things like "don't look at too much stuff we wouldn't like you to look at" and then wondered why it hasn't amounted to much.
Also it depends on exactly what your job is. Often HR don't have a clue on a stick, which leads to surreal conversations like "So why are you spending so much time on the Company's House website? Is it part of your job?" The answer almost was: "No, it's because it's full of hot guys." (It was a woman being asked.)
Don't go in with an assumption of guilt, but don't be aggressive either. If you do have a lot of internet work, ask for examples where they think you may have been doing non-work stuff. What you consider non-work stuff and what they consider non-work may be entirely different.
If they have caught you, just explain the circumstances, and do the usual promises of cutting down. "Too much" is a very vague limit anyway.
Hope that helps... :grouphug:
Edit: Also remember it doesn't matter how long you're looking at something. The only thing it tracks is downloading a page."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

Lucy, poor you, you are having a really hard time. If this is the first time they have pulled you up on this, I'm sure they will have to follow procedures and give you verbal warnings, written warnings etc before they can sack you. And if you explain how much pressure you have been under recently, and that you have been accessing your 'support network' (us
) when things were getting on top of you, it might not even come to that.
