Sorry if I bring you all down but...

I've not had a good day today I was all happy and positive and then my boss told me they had been looking at me internet use at work and it was high and i now have to have a disaplinary with HR. I am terrified and want to cry. I know it's my own fault for using the net at work, but I don't know what I am going to to.

I can't afford to be out of work and this is stressing me out so much!! I hoping that I will be offered the other job tomorrow. But what happens if not?

I feel like I am taking 2 steps forward and 4 back!!!

    Lucy
I think you just have to go to HR hold your hands up and say sorry it won't happen again. Im sure if your honest and upfront they will appreciate it and forget all about it. Try not to stress too much hun, Im sure things will be ok

Lucy - I'm sending you a big hug.

Unless you have been looking at 'naughty' websites at work (and I'm sure you haven't!!) I doubt they would sack you. Do you know what the company policy is for internet usage? Many have one and it might be worth having a look.

Are you a member of a union? If so, take along the local rep. If not, then ensure you take along a good friend or someone who can take notes on your behalf - you are entitled to this at the very least and it will mean you can remember everything afterwards AND you can compare your notes to the official minutes which HR should also take.

Well I can hold my hands up and say yes I did wrong, it's stopped. But I feel so bad and I want to cry and don't know what to do and it's so scary.

I was spending a lot of time here that's all.

Big hugs for you Lucy. I agree with the others - check your company policy, and be honest. I've had a boss 'having a word' with me in a previous job about internet use (sprung on me at the end of an appraisal), and it turned out OK. I take it you've not been getting behind with work because of it? If you have too much time on your hands at work and are online because you're bored and have nothing to do (the case for a lot of people I think!), it may be worth making them aware of this, depends if you want to be given more work though I suppose!

Fingers crossed that the other job comes through for you x

Lucy - big hug for you - have a look over on the employment and jobseeking board and have a quick search over there - I am sure I have read of similar things and there are loads of employment law experts who can point you in the right direction.

Hi to everyone - hope we are all well x x

You are probably scared because of the thought of being 'told off'. I think it will be a case of gritting your teeth, admitting it, saying sorry and promising not to do it again.

There are very few of us here on MSE who can honestly say they have never done the same thing whilst working in an office so you aren't alone in what you've done ;)

I can't emphasise enough though the worth of having someone sit with you even if it is just for moral support. If I were nearer I'd come along, only because I went through something similar with a manager who had it in for me and I made the mistake of ignoring my colleagues advice and going it alone - I never did it again, but then I ended up with the last laugh ;)
