Heres one for the mathematicians amongst you that gives an indication of the cost to Tesco if all MSE'rs registered and not registered with the site. At any one time there are always twice as many non registered people as registered using the site. As there are about 76,000 members the there are approx. 152,000 non members. For simplicity call the total 200,000. Lets say we all do 2 £75 on line shops each month utilising 1000 points voucher each time. Then Tesco would make 2 x 75 x 200,000 x 12. This equals 360 million pounds !! Now as the 1000 points codes no longer work I wonder if we will all continue to do all these on line shops........ ??. Your thoughts please. If the maths is wrong sorry.

Before we get too carried away with how much Tesco are losing, we need to re look at the figures.
Firstly, even though there may be 76,000 members and as many non members reading the forums, I doubt whether all of these people are using Tesco codes. Remember, the points forums are just a small % of the MSE site. I think a more realistic figure to use would be 50,000 people.
Doing the 2 shops monthly at £75 each would result in lost sales of £90 million IF we all stopped using Tesco.
Supermarkets tend to make approx. 25% gross profit on groceries i.e. the difference between their cost and selling price is £22.5 million.
However, this is just part of the story. We now need to estimate the cost to Tesco of issuing the points. Many people often assume that the points cost Tesco's partners and not Tesco, but as I pointed out in an earlier post their is a definate cost to Tesco, which I would suggest is at least £10 per 1000 points (as this is the amount we could all save if we used the vouchers in store.)
This then means Tesco's extra costs if we use a 1000 points code each shop are £10 x 2 shops x 12 months x 50,000 users =£12 million.
This means that Tesco's potential loss of profit is £10.5 million (£22.5m - £12m). Although this is a substantial amount, it is hardly the £360 million originally suggested, and is reliant on EVERYONE BOYCOTTING TESCO ONLINE.
I think it is time we started taking action and say Asda (or Morrisons) 'Here We Come'
  • That's a family of 5, average spend £80 per week..............
  • Does anyone know if its possible to add codes after the first checkout? I often book a slot on Tesco, add 2 items then checkout as I book a good few days ahead to make sure I get the required slot. But when you go back and change your order the option to add vouchers isnt there!

No you can't add a code once youve been throgh checkout. Best to just fill your basket up with anything at all to get to the amount needed for the code, add the code, checkout then change your final order before delivery. You can change your order but you cant add a code once you've checked out
    Thanx

  • I read on the other Tesco thread that Tesco were removing points that were obtained with vouchers not sent to the clubcard holder, I've just checked my points balance online and it was 4195 and is now 1295!! Are they going round deducting points off people??

  • Statements are currently coming out, it may be because those are the points you have earned since the cut off date. I just checked my balances and it is also down.

10 out of 10 and an A*. I deliberately chose thw maximum number of possible people who may view the forums and did not mention the clubcard points benefit of doing so. I put the post in merely to prompt discussion. I do agree totally with all your calculations and your conclusion.

No, it's just time for the points to be sent out as vouchers so they are probably just the points left in your account after the cut off date. The same has happened to me too. ;)

I've just been shopping and on the bottom of the receipt it says "Clubcard Points up to 29th January have been converted to Vouchers and will arrive by 8th March"

My clubcard balance is down by 10,000 points so I am guessing it is just because we will be getting our vouchers soon.

    HTH :)
